Note N1051Akron Beacon Journal (OH) - Wednesday, April 19, 2000 Clarence Ray Peercy passed away April 14, 2000, with his loving family at his side, at the age of 77, following a courageous battle with cancer. He fought hard, maintaining his dignity until the very end. Mr. Peercy was born in Monticello, Ky., and from the age of 3 was a lifetime resident of Akron. Ray attended the Akron Public Schools, where he was thought of quite fondly by his teachers for his academic excellence. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. He was employed as a carpenter through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 639 for 37 years until his retirement in 1987. Throughout his career, he took great pride in his work, performing every job with a perfectionist's detail. He pounded many a nail in both local buildings and the homes of his friends and family. His zeal for politics and world affairs, complemented by his ability to articulate his thoughts, made him an engaging conversationalist. He was a generous neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand or a tool or two. He is greatly admired by his children for his dedication as a father, his wisdom, and his everlasting love. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lona Peercy; sister, Vena Rice; brothers-in-law, Virgil Rice and Arthur Roach; and son-in-law, Raymond Smarr. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife and loving caregiver, Gloria; daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Rick Wesig of Akron; daughter, Lisa Peercy of Akron; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Christen Peercy of Sagamore Hills; daughter, Barbara Smarr of Lorain; and daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Bob Shearer of Akron. Other survivors include loving sister, Mrs. Lela Roach of Akron; aunts, Mrs. Dosha Peercy of Uniontown and Mrs. Dorothy Peercy of Stow; Mrs. Wilda Kriston of Akron, to whom he was previously married and the mother of his eldest daughters, Barbara and Shirley. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, including his loving grandson, Brandon Wesig (and his dog, Troub), who will deeply miss his grandpa, Patty Steyer of Evans, Ga., Shane (Juli) Smarr, Shawn Smarr, Darren (Karen) Smarr, and Steven Smarr, all of Lorain, Tammy Christy, Roxane (Terry) Nunn, and Carmen Cessna, all of Akron; 17 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
