Biography

James Payne is a part of US Black heritage.

James was born about 1862 in Virginia. He was the son of James Payne and Rebecca Walker. He was the only one of his siblings born in Virginia, as the family subsequently moved to Washington, D.C.

The 1870 Census[1] shows him at age 8 in the home of his parents in Washington, D.C. He is "at school."

The 1880 Census[2] shows him at age 18 in the home of his parents in Washington, D.C. He is working as a clerk in a lawyer's office.

He married Florence Lena Prater on 2 Feb 1888 in Washington, D.C.[3] They had one child:

The 1910 Census[4] shows him at age 48 with his wife and one son in Washington, D.C. He is working as a mono type caster for the Government Printing Office.

The 1920 Census[5] shows him at age "50" with his wife, son, and a lodger in in Washington, D.C. He is working as a machinist for the G. P. O.

The 1930 Census[6] shows him at age 68 with his wife, son, and sister in Washington, D.C. He is now retired.

He died in 1939 in Washington, D.C., and is buried at the Columbian Harmony Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia.[7] Excerpted from his obituary:

"On Sunday, June 4, 1939, at 8:30 p.m., at his residence, 1604 6th st. n.w., JAMES A. PAYNE, devoted husband of Mrs. Lena Payne; father of the late Leon Payne, son of the late James and Rebecca Payne and brother of Ellen, Annie and Andrew Payne." [8]
