Birth Date: Abt. 1640
Place: Virginia[2]

Note

Note: @N8138@ Married Sarah.

Data below by JIM MILLER 8/29/2020:

It appears the William Patterson married one of James Miller's daughers and this daughter likely had past away prior to James Miller's 1656 York County, Virginia will. William Patterson is noted as "sonn" in James Miller's will which in today's terms means son in law. See below:

James Miller’s Will Transcription

"6 May 1656. Will of James MILLER. Weak in body. Date: 6 May 1656; Proved 24 June 1656. To three sons James MILLER, Edward MILLER, and Augustine MILLER each when of age. Other personal property. To sons James and Edward 'plantation I live upon' In case of death of either to the survivor and to Augustine. To my oldest daughter Mary STRECHEY a cow. To 'my sonn William STRECHEY a suit of clothes'. To my daughter Elizabeth MILLER personal property. Executrix wife Mary, Overseers 'my loving friends William STRECHEY my sonn Mr Nicholas TROTT and William SPEARE and William PATTISON'. "The Coopers timber that has now fallen be made up according to my cond'cons with the cooper of the William and John and what my wife's shall not have occasion to use about the crop that then the other to be sold to pay a debt which I doe owe William SHORTWRIGHT living in New-Poquoson" Wife to have land during life. Signed the mark of James (IM) MILLER. Wit: Henry GOOCH, Law. HULETT, Anne HODGE, Nicholas TROTT (sic) (Trotter?) Probated on the oaths of TROTT (sic) and HULETT. (York County, VA, 1648-1657, p. 63."

I just realized that James Miller in his 1656 York Co., VA will he notes: “my loving friends William Strechey my sonn Mr. Nicholas TROTT and William SPEARE and William PATTISON.” Since William Strechey was the husband of James Miller’s daughter, Mary “Martha” Miller (b- after 1641); and James Miller refers to the other three men as “sonn” (which in today’s terms means son in law); the other three men are highly likely also the husbands of other daughter’s James Miller does not mention in his will; most likely due to the fact they had past away prior to his will (dated 5/6/1656).

Calculation of earliest estimated birth years of these likely unnamed daughters of James Miller:

If youngest daugther had married at age 16 and died in childbirth, she could have been born circa 1640. Of course it is possible that two of the unnamed daughters were twins.

The other two older unnamed daughters likely were born circa 1638 and circa 1636. James Miller only child whose birth date is known (based on her grave stone) was his daughter Elizabeth “Isabella” Miller who was born 8/24/1640 in New Kent County, VA (but I do not know the source of her birth location). James Miller arrived in Virginia in 1636 with his wife Mary; so I will assume that Mary was the mother of these three unknown daughters.

William Pattison Records:

1655:p. 13. It is ordered that Thomas Brooks pay Daniel Tucker 1400 li. tob. ‘& caske, but in case of disagreement, Mr. Tho: Michell & Mr. William Pattison » are to View the ad. tob. on oath before Mr. William Hay.

“Mr. Tho: Michell” is highly likely Thomas Mitchell (WikiTree ID: Mitchell-2702) (circa 1640 to prior to May, 1690 New Kent County, VA). The 1662 land patent of 1,680 acres in New Kent Co., VA to John Lewis and Thomas Mitchell was posted on Thomas Mitchell’s WikiTree profile. John Lewis highly likely is John Lewis Jr. (WikiTree ID: Lewis-239) the husband of James Miller’s daughter, Elizabeth “Isabella” Miller. A Lt. Col. Gooch is noted as owning land bordering this 1662 land purchase who could very well be the Henry Gooch that witnessed James Miller’s 1656 will.

Note: Viginia Land Patent, PB 4, p.565 15 Jan 1662 1680 acres to John Lewis & Thomas Mitchell in county of New Kent. Spanish oak in line of Mr. Mitchell; hickory by the Westover path; to Lt. Col. Gooch, his line. Given for transportation [individuals not listed]. Entry of Survey 30 Oct 1662. CAVALIERS & PIONEERS; Vol II, p.253 Thomas Mitchell, Planter of New Kent Co., 2436 acs. in sd. Co. being the land he lives on; 28 Feb 1682/3 PB 7, p.232. Beg. at Mr. Robert Jarrett, by Westover Path; by an Indian field, to line tree in the bounds of the County line, neere a branch of the Skimino; by Mr. Lancelett Bathurst's fence; by Towwink Sw., by the Rotten Br; by the horse roade, etc. Bounded on all sides by marked lines. Part of sd. land granted to Thomas Mitchell by patent dated 15 Jan 1662 and the other part granted to John Lewis & the said Thomas Mitchell on the same day, which sd. Lewis sold his title to sd. Mitchell & acknowledged same in the Co. Ct. of New Kent on 18 Feb 1672. The extant Vestry records in St Peters Parish, New Kent Co begin in 1685. Thomas Mitchall is on p.2 of these records - he was paid 500 #'s of tobacco for keeping a bastard child of the Parish. He was serving as a Vestryman at that time and was elected to Church Warden. As Church Warden, Thomas Mitchell was assigned as collector of the Parish levy in 1686 and was to prosecute any persons found guilty of fornication. In Oct of 1687, he was ordered to prosecute a woman servant belonging to Capt Jos. Foster for having a bastard child and then be cleared from the office of Churchwarden. In May of 1689, Mr. Mitchell Senr was named as a processioner to remark the bounds of each man's land. He continued to serve as a Vestryman until the meeting of May, 1690, when George Poindexter, Senr was elected in the place of Thomas Mitchell, dec'd. An entry in the Parish Register is as follows: "Mary the daughter of Robert Sperill & Ann Butterfield baptized the 20 day of September 1686, being aged according to the testemony of Mr. Thom. Mitchell & others 4 years the 5 of Octo. [Is this the bastard child in his care?] [I am assuming Thomas is the earliest ancestor of this family in New Kent Co.] NOTE: My 3rd great grandfather, Anderson Perkins Miller, Sr.’s birth was recorded in 1776 at St Peters Parish, New Kent Co. and his father, John Miller (b- 1736) is thought to have died in New Kent Co.

William Patterson’s WikiTree profile only notes one child, Ann (Patterson) Pulliam. Ann’s descendants noted on WikiTree have a number of ties to my Miller family such as the Jennings; Hudson; Watkins; Robertson; Fowlkes; Thompson; and Perkins families. On the Fowlkes line, William Patterson’s 2nd great grand daughter Mary Jennings married Joseph A. Fowlkes who was the brother of my 5th great grandfather, John Anthony Fowlkes (1722-1799).

1656: "p. 52. It is lord-cred that James ffurly, servant to William Pattison, for running away tree months during his apprenticeship, his time is to be doubled and he is to serve 6 months from his freedom by Indenture.”

Possible other connections of Patterson's to my Miller's

(Edward Miller noted below is WikiTree Miller-66124; born 1620 Gloucestershire, England)

The Edward Miller headwright used by a Henry Neale in 1643 to purchase 850 acres in James City Co., VA maybe my possible 1st cousin (9 x removed) Edward Miller below at age 22. This Edward Miller may have been the older Edward Miller in Surry / Isle of Wight Co.; who could have been the Edward Miller that joined Nathaniel Bacon in Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676 at age 56. There was a statement in a Bacon Rebellion document that indicated he may have been older when he participated in Bacon’s Rebellion.

The Isle of Wight Co., VA 1665 record below notes in a deposition an Edward Miller notes he was “aged 40”. Edward Miller (b-11/10/1620) would have been 44 years old the day of this deposition (close to “aged 40” but not exactly). However sometimes these statements of age in old documents are rounded a bit, so this could have been Edward Miller (b-1620).

pg. 544 A marriage contract between Richard POOL and Mary, relict and admr. of John DAVIS, deceased, is made. EDWARD MILLER, deposes, aged 40, that 28 years ago there was a little house between Col. Robert PITT and Mr. IZARD which was without the survey, which house was called 'Seward's Quarter,' 9 Mar. 1665”. Note: Descendants of John Miller (c. 1665-1742) married into the Pitt family.

Edward Miller (b-1620) had a daughter, Anne Jousa Miller who married John Barbee in England, who was the father of William Barbee (b- c. 1660) who married Elizabeth Beaumont. They had a son, John Barbee (b-1687) who married Ann Miller (daughter of my 6th great grandfather, John Miller; b-c. 1665).

Edward Miller (b-1620)’s possible brother, William M. Miller (b-1626) married Anna Patersoune (aka Pattison / Patterson?) in 1653 in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland. James Miller, Sr. (D-1656 York Co., VA) notes a William “Pattison” / Patterson as “sonn” it appears on James’ 1656 will. William Patterson had a daughter also named Ann Patterson who is thought to have married a William Pullman in 1687 in New Kent Co., VA.

Ann Patterson & William Pulliam had a son named William Patterson Pulliam. William Patterson Pulliam had a daughter, Mary Jane Pulliam who married William Henry Jennings, Sr. (b- 1676), the father of John Anthony Fowlkes of Hyde Park in Nottoway Co.

Patterson-4878 and Patterson-582 appear to represent the same person because: same daughter, both profiles have the birth as an estimate
