Biography
Francis Paraday served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: December 13, 1861 Mustered out: December 10, 1862 Side: USA Regiment(s): Company E, 102nd New York Infantry
Francis was born in 1843. He passed away in 1920.
The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:
DISCHARGED SHORTLY AFTER ANTIETAM - The 102nd Infantry was also known as the Van Buren Light Infantry in honor of their colonel, Thomas M. Van Buren. The regiment was principally recruited in New York City, however, there were men from other areas of the state and Vermont. One such man was Francis Parody who was born in Perrys Mills, but was living in Ellenburg Center at the time of his enlistment. He was mustered into the 102nd on December 13, 1861, in New York and assigned to Company E under Captain Lewis Stegman.
The first eight companies left the state on March 10, 1862, followed by Companies I and K on April 7th. By the end of March, they had traveled west along the north bank of the Potomac to Harper’s Ferry. Their first major engagement was at Cedar Mountain in early August where they had 115 casualties. It turned out to be a Confederate victory – the first battle of the Northern Virginia Campaign.
Next, they went on to support General Pope and fought at the second battle of Bull Run, then went into position at Chantilly, but was not engaged. They fought at Antietam, and had 37 killed, wounded and missing. They were then involved in the minor actions at Lovettsville, Ripon, Hillsboro, Winchester, Wolf Run shoal, and Fairfax Station, before going into winter quarters at Stafford Court House, a little north of Fredericksburg, VA. It was here that Francis was discharged for disability on December 10, 1862.
He returned to Clinton County, married Margaret Dumas in St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay in 1865, and by 1870, had a son, Felix, and was working in a sawmill in Mooers. By the time he died in 1920 in Indiana, he and Margaret had 14 children born in New York, Indiana, Colorado, and Illinois. He was buried beside his wife in the Saint John the Baptist Cemetery in Earl Park, IN, beside his wife who had died in 1918. A couple of their children lived until the early 1960s.
