Biography

  • There is controversy as to which set of Palmers are her parents. I believe Daniel is the more likely as it was so important to her and her husband Samuel Stanton to name a child Daniel Palmer Stanton that they gave the name not just once but twice to a child. When the first one died, they gave the name again to a child. But another source shows Ichabod Palmer as her father.
  • There is plenty of documentation to show the children of Mary Palmer and Samuel Stanton. There is very thin documentation to show whether Daniel or Ichabod is her father. One source that shows Daniel Palmer and Margaret Smith as her parents is Find a Grave. One source that shows Ichabod Palmer and Elizabeth Noyes as her parentis an entry in the records of Family Search, not one that is an official record of CT births. The basis for someone entering it into Family Search is not shown.
  • Either way she is at least three times a descendant of Walter Palmer, the immigrant, and his wife Rebecca Short. (None of Ichabod's other children felt compelled to name a child for him nor did they name a child Daniel.)
  • The Stanton Society I believe is emerging as the best source because the researchers for it gives considerable documentation.

They cite Connecticut church records, birth records, marriage records, and also North America, Family Histories 1500-2000 (n.;.: Ancestry.com Operations,, Inc. Book Title: Lineage Book: NSDAr: vol. 151:1919). The Stanton Society says "Mary Palmer was b. 31 January 1736-37 at Stonington, New London Co., CT. She was the daughter of Daniel Palmer and Mary Hewit Palmer. Mary Palmer married Samuel Stanton, son of John Stanton Jr and Mary Starkweather."

  • Another entry of The Stanton Society accounts for the Mary Palmer born to Ichabod Palmer and Elizabeth Sanford Noyes. It reads "Mary Palmer was baptized on 11 October 1736 at North Stonington, CT. She was b 6 July 1736 at Stonington. She was the daughter of Ichabod Palmer and Elizabeth Sanford Noyes. Mary Palmer died 6 July 1754 at age 17." Sources cited for this are "North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000" Palmer Groups; CT Town Birth Records pre 1870 (Barbour Collection); and CT Church Record Abstracts 1630-1920. This Mary simply didn't live long enough to have any possibility of marrying Samuel Stanton.
  • Both naming patterns, and the times of death, plus going back to original CT records make it certain now that the Mary Palmer who m. Samuel Stanton is the daughter of Daniel Palmer, and not of Ichabod Palmer.
