Biography

A birth record for a boy issued by the Texas State Board of Health Certificate of Birth, stamped 26781, dated 25 August 1910, has been indexed on Ancestry as belonging to Elizabeth Palermo. The only other information legible on the document image is that the Father is Luke Palermo, and the birth was in Brazos, Texas. The date, place, and father's name are all close matches for information found in secondary sources for Elizabeth Palermo, and not for any of her siblings.^[1] She is the daughter of Leoluca di Palermo, of Corleone, and his wife Rosalia Rizzotto, a native of Texas.

In the 1920 federal census of Brazos, Justice Precinct 8, Luke Palermo, 47 (b. 1873), heads a household with his wife Rosa, 36 (b. 1884), and children Tony (this is Tommy), 16 (b. 1904), Rosa, 13 (b. 1907), Laurence, 12 (b. 1908), Elizabeth, 9 (b. 1911), Sam, 7 (b. 1913), Ben, 4 (b. 1916), and Johnnie, 1 yr 3 mo (b. Sep 1918). Luke was born in Italy, emigrated in 1890, naturalized in 1906. His wife and children were born in Texas. His wife’s parents were born in Italy. Luke is a farmer working on his own account. His son Tony works with him.^[2]

In the 1930 federal census of Dallas, Dallas, TX, taken 3 April, Luke Palermo, 54 (b. 1876), heads a household at 3521 Howell St. With him are his wife Rosalie, 48 (b. 1882), and children Tommy, 26 (b. 1904), Rosa M., 23 (b. 1907), Lawrence, 22 (b. 1908), Elizabeth, 19 (b. 1911), Samuel, 17 (b. 1913), and Bennie, 14 (b. 1917). Luke and Rosalie married when he was 27 and she was 20 (m. 1902-3). He was born in Italy and she was born in Texas of Italian parents. Their children were born in TX. Luke emigrated in 1890 and is a naturalized citizen. He is a farmer. Tommy is a wholesale cigar salesman. Lawrence is a butcher in a meat market.^[3]

In the 1940 federal census of San Antonio, Los Angeles Co. CA taken 19 April, Luke Palermo, 66, heads a household at 1433 East 74th St. with wife Rosalie, 57, and children Samuel, 27, Elizabeth, 29, Ben, 24, John, 21, and Lewis, 16. Luke was born in Italy and his wife and children in Texas. They lived in the same house in 1935. Samuel is a railroad car man for Pacific Food Express. Elizabeth is an examiner in a garment factory. Ben is a delivery man for a garment factory. John is an auto loader at General Motors.^[4]

Leoluca Di Palermo declares his intention to naturalize in the US District Court at Los Angeles, Southern District of CA. He lives at 1433 E. 74th St., Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA. He is a farmer, age 63, medium complexion, brown eyes, gray hair, 5’5.5”, 152#. mole over left eye brow and on right cheek. Born in Corleone 27 September 1874. Married Rosalie on 1 July 1902 in Dallas, TX. She was born in Bryan on 6 September 1882. Leoluca has 8 children: Anthony, born in Dallas 13 May 1903, Rose, born in Bryan on 19 April 1906. Lorenzo born in Dallas on 17 October 1907. Elizabeth born 28 August 1910 in Bryan. Salvatore born 14 January 1913 in Bryan. Bernardo born 13 January 1916 in Bryan. Giovanni born 17 January 1919 in Bryan. Louis born 27 April 1923 in Dallas. Anthony lives in Dallas. The other children live in Los Angeles (or some do, hard to tell the way the names are presented). Leoluca naturalized in Bryan in State District Court in 1892. Last foreign residence in Corleoni. Emigrated from Palermo to New York 29 November 1890. Signs his name and swears in Los Angeles on 5 July 1940.^[5]
