Biography

Birth & Baptism

John Page son of Robert Page and Susanna (Syckering) Page was christened 25 Sep 1586 at Boxted, Essex, England as son of Robert Page.[1], [2][3]

It must be noted that Charles Nash Page in his 1911 work "History and genealogy of the Page family...&c"[4] stated that John was the son of Richard Page. That was incorrect; Moriarty proved that he was instead the son of Robert Page and Susanna Syckerling.[2] Moriarty did find a Richard Page buried 2 Dec 1665 at Boxted so possibly John's father Robert was a brother or cousin of Richard but that relationship is speculative.

Marriage & Children

He married Phoebe (baptized at Lavenham 1 April 1594[5]), the daughter of William and Agnes (Neves) Payne at Lavenham, Suffolk, England on 5 June 1621.[3] Phoebe was a sister of William Paine of Ipswich and Boston, a prominent New England merchant.[6]

Immigration

John arrived with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 according to Charles Nash Page, embarking on the "Jewell" in 1630 with his wife and three children (William, Phoebe and Daniel)[4]. Anderson contradicts this (see "Children" below) and says that Page immigrated with only two children.

John may have been one of the earliest Page immigrants in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John was one of the first settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, where he was a well-to-do yeoman. He was constable of that town in 1630, and he was made a Freeman on 18 May 1631. In 1662, he was one of the group of Watertown men who& settled the town of Groton, Massachusetts, where he was one of the early Selectman.[3][6]

On 21 Apr 1631 his house in Watertown burned down, set on fire by some coals carried from one house to another which fell into the leaves.[3]

Children

Moriarty states that John brought only two children from England, quoting a letter sent "in the year 1631" (but contradicted by Anderson who says the letter was November 1630) from Page's old minister at Dedham, England (John Rogers) to John Winthrop, Jr (son of the governor of Mass. bay Colony). Rogers describes Page as "late of Dedham (England, not Massachusetts), he referenced John Page's house burning down and mentioned Page's 2 children. Moriarty gives these children as Daniel and John.[2] He does list a daughter Phoebe, but does not claim a birth date for her, only a marriage date of 1662 which would place her birth at (likely) 1642 or prior. Moriarty in another NEHGR-published work[6] quotes the Boxted parish registers which have gaps in the years where Page's children would have been christened although presumably they may have appeared at Lavenham or elsewhere nearby.

Charles Nash Page lists the three transported children as William, "Phebe" and Daniel and lists of the "Jewell" passengers on the internet typically show these three as well.[4]

Anderson lists the first 3 children as Phoebe, John and Daniel with the first 2 born before the letter referenced above (i.e. by 1630 and Daniel born about 1631 after the letter was written). Anderson's assertion is that Phoebe and John were the 2 children transported.[3]

In summary, there is no absolute certainty of what order the children were born and exactly which ones came from England with John. We can say with certainty that existence of at least 4 is proven by primary records including the will of John Page which was disputed between three of his children (see Death & Estate section below).

Children proven by primary records

First three presumed born at or near Lavenham, Essex, England; the younger at Middlesex Bay Colony, British Colonial America.

  1. Daniel Page, b. bef 1631 in England, d. 10d:6m:1634 (old style) or 10 Aug 1634 (new style) [2][7]
  2. Phoebe (Page) Cutler, possibly b. before 1631 England
  3. John Page, possibly b. early 1631 Massachusetts Bay Colony
  4. Samuel Page, b. 20 Aug 1633 at Watertown[8] (note that John, Samuel and Phoebe were the three involved in the dispute over their father's estate)[3]

Disputed or Uncertain Children

  1. William possibly b. England, possibly eldest. Nash states that he married Hannah, he died 9 Dec 1664 and left a will.[4] Anderson and Moriarty do not include this child. A William Page DID die on this date in Watertown, Massachusetts but with no supplemental information in the town vital records.[9] This William did leave a will listing wife Hannah, "kin" (possibly wife's relatives?) William and Thomas Leason and bequeathing to "all my kindred now alive" but a relationship with known members of the family of John Page is not given.[10] Bond in "Genealogies of...early settlers of Watertown...&c" also supports William as a son of John the immigrant but with no additional sourcing.[11]
  1. Mary and Elizabeth: Moriarty [6][2] added 2 more daughters alive in 1660; Mary and Elizabeth but without source. Anderson in "Great Migration" refutes these 2 daughters noting that there is no evidence of them.

This profile originally included these additional children, which are not credited by Nash, Anderson or Moriarty: Roger, Robert, Edward, David.

Death & Estate

After the burning of Groton in Philip's war in 1675, he returned to Watertown, where he died on 18 December 1676 "aged about 90 years".[2][11]

I'm a descendant of John Page. I've know that for many years, and just stumbled upon this site.

My great-great-etc grandfather is John Page, the Governor of New Hampshire, and you'd be amazed at how closely my Dad favors his picture.

Beyond the Governor "John Page", the one in this wiki page is also my ancestor, but obviously from even further back in time. We have a family Bible, from my grandfather on my Dad's side, that lists both of the John Pages I mentioned and the one on this wiki page.

Anyway, it's wonderful to find this kind of site exists and it having information that is related to my family!

"Our family." ;) Nice to "meet" another cousin, and welcome to Wikitree! It's a wonderful site, and gets better every day. My line is through his daughter, Phoebe. If you would be willing to share scans of that family Bible, it would be a wonderful treasure on these profiles, especially if it has any further information about his children.

For profile managers acepting the merge, please keep the note about the younger John Page on the 1635 "Truelove" from Paige-212 just for future research.

Paige-212 and Page-457 appear to represent the same person because: I believe Page-457 & Paige-212 are intended to be the same person (same dates, locations, relatives) but perhaps didn't show up earlier due to the surname spelling choices. The wife of both, Phoebe, is a dupe as is son Samuel. The protected page would be the intended merge end. Thanks, Becky Elizabeth (Simmons-11603)

Becky, I agree with the merge, do you intend to submit merges for Phoebe and Samuel too?

I was told I'd be denied on the merge from the notes on the other bio BUT - I did adopt the second Phoebe profile last night so I could have some input with other WikiTree members who agree it doesn't make sense to have the same spouse connected to two "different" men with the same name, dates and locations...

Also with the son Samuel there is a 30 year age difference but I think it a typo (see comments on the page for him and the other parents) because if his birth is correct then the duplicates "John and Phebe" were 70 and 80 years old when he was born.

Still haven't heard from anyone on those findings except for the project protected side who have all been in favor for the merges. Cheers! Becky Elizabeth Simmons-11603

Right, I see your exchange of comments on the Samuel profile. These "cleanup" merges are a pain when one profile has bad and unsourced data. One person will reject it because the dates don't match and if you edit them to match, another person will reject it because you "fudged the data" to make them look the same. Frustrating. I think you're doing the right thing, just approach it in a reasonable way. I'll try to help nudge it along :)

EXACTLY! While having support from some awesome members (I saw your Thank You's Gene X) - you're the first person to publicly write exactly what I've been dealing with while doing these checks. I guess I should see if there is a group for it but I've been refreshing my various GED.com's regularly and checking new uploads that seem to override the comparison system (there has been a large increase since about Nov 2021). I would never accuse anyone of anything as there could be a glitch but I can assure you that each time I do it there is 1 or more strings of unsourced profiles that were uploaded and clearly have established profiles. The issue then arrises about profile "management" because of varying levels of experience, understanding of this site and so forth. I feel that I understand most sides (except for the few that have told me they "didn't care" about provenance or continuity bc it was "their ancestor" to create what they wanted)...at which point you can only explain that a better place for that is Ancestry or My Heritage etc...

I digress. Thanks for the support here and I should add that neither profile in this case is brand new but one has clearly had more changes or "face lifts" so hopefully objectivity or rationale will overcome any personal feelings so we can proceed. One ancestor at a time;) Sláinte! Becks

You are absolutely right. I just try to remember that the majority of folks on WT are truly interested in fact-based genealogy and are willing to listen and collaborate. On the other hand trying to get some people to actually think about their assertions and source quality and maybe even be willing to change their mind is like trying to nail jello to a wall. Insert your favorite quote about patience and virtue or "the wisdom to know the difference" here ;)

Have a good weekend and best of luck with your genealogy!

Ed Fields, thanks for the cleanup you've been doing. So that nobody overwrites each other's edits, if you are still working on this profile to get rid of incorrect children and bring it into alignment with "Great Migration", could you post a message at the top asking folks to hold off editing? Thanks!
