Biography

Alice was born in 1828. She was the daughter of Spotswood Padgett and Elizabeth Bridge.

She grew up in a large family along the Back Creek, near Sherando, Augusta Co, VA.^[1]

Elizabeth married Shreve-292 Martin E. Shreve on 11 Feb 1850 in Augusta Co, VA.^[2] **See researcher's note below.

They settled in what would become Union, Upshur Co, WVA to farm and raise their family.^{[3][4] [5][6]}

She passed away on 24 Mar 1900 at Hinkle, Upshur Co, WVA.^[7][8] She was buried in the Mount Rupert Church Cemetery, Buckhannon, Upshur Co, WVA.^[9]

Shreve, Elizabeth "*(Died) At Hinkle, March 24, 1900, Mrs. Elizabeth Shreve, Aged 71 years. Mrs. Shreve was the daughter of Spottswood and Elizabeth Bridge Padgett and was born on Back Creek, Augusta Co., VA, June 8, 1828. On April 10, 1850, she was married to Martin E. Shreve of which union there was born twelve children, nine of whom survive her. Mrs. Shreve was the grandmother of eighty-two grand and great grandchildren, seventy-six of whom are still living. In 1846, at the age of 18, she was converted to the Christian religion. Funeral services were conducted at the Mt. Rupert Church, Sunday, at 3 p.m. by Rev C.C. Lanham. Interment at Mt. Rupert Cemetery."

"The funeral sermon of Mrs. Elizabeth Shreve was preached Sunday, Aug. 12th at Mt. Rupert Church, by Rev. C.C. Lanham to probably the largest congreation the church ever held. Mrs. Shreve was the wife of Martin E. Shreve and died Mar. 24, 1900, aged 71 years, leaving a husband, nine children and seventy-two grandchildren. She was a remarkably good woman and loved by all in the community where she lived. She was converted when but 18 years of age in a log cabin in Augusta County, VA. She joined the church at this place and remained a member until she was married, April 10, 1850. On moving to what is now west Virginia, with her husband, she had with her a letter of church membership and had her name entered on the church records at the Kesling M. E. Church where she remained a faithful member until she was called home to rest with Jesus."
