Biography

Leoluca Ortoleva is born around 1822 in Corleone, the son of Don Francesco Ortoleva and Donna Angela Milone.

Early in 1834, Donna Angela Ortoleva, 48 (b. 1785), a widow, lives on the strada di Bruno, between the Portico di Migrine and the Pianitto, in the SW quarter of Corleone, near San Agostino, with her children: Donna Gaetana, 27 (b. 1806), Vincenzo, 21 (b. 1812), Giuseppe, 19 (b. 1814), Biagio, 18 (b. 1815), Federico, 13 (b. 1820), Leoluca, 11 (b. 1822), Liborio, 8 (b. 1825), and Marianna, 6 (she will be six in July).^[1] Emmanuela, about 23 years old at this time, becomes a nun, according to the record of her death; she does not appear in her mother's household in this Church census.

Don Leoluca marries Donna Biagia Carmela Marullo on 30 June 1862. Leoluca's brother, Don Friderico, is married to Biagia Carmela's older half-sister, Donna Giovanna Guarneri.^[2]

Don Leoluca and Donna Biagia Carmela have at least four children: Francesco (1863), Maria Angela (c. 1866), Vincenzo (c. 1871), and Marianna (c. 1878).

Francesco is born 7 May 1863 in Corleone. His godparents are Don Calogero Ortoleva and Donna Gaetana Ortoleva, who are both unmarried.^[3]

On 7 November 1888, Maria Angela and Giuseppe Vernagallo announce their intention to wed. According to this record, Maria Angela, 22 (b. 1866), civile, is the daughter of Leoluca Ortoleva, 65 (b. 1823), possidente, and Biagia Carmela Marullo, possidente, all residents of Corleone.^[4] Maria Angela and Giuseppe marry in the Church on 28 November.^[5]

Marianna, civile (landowner), marries for the first time at the age of 16 to Vincenzo Gagliano, falegname (carpenter), in Corleone in November 1894.^[6]

Biagia Carmela dies at age 60 on 17 June 1899. This record does not mention her marriage.^[7]

Vincenzo marries Antonina Gullo (perhaps Gallo) in Manhattan on 23 September 1911.^[8]
