Biography

Mary was born in Truro, South Australia about 1867. She is the daughter of Robert Orrock and Amelia Coward. She passed away in Fullarton, South Australia during 1938.

Mary married William Grose at North Adelaide, South Australia on 27 July 1886.[1] The following marriage notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Express and Telegraph, on 7 August 1886:[2]

GROSE—ORROCK.—On the 27th July, at the residence of Mrs. Phips, (sic) North Adelaide, by the Rev. R. L. Coward, William Grose, only surviving son of Mr. John Grose, of Glenelg, to Mary Ann, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Robert Orrock, of Truro, and granddaughter of the officiating minister.

Mary died at Fullarton, South Australia on 28 November 1938 at the age of 71 years.[3] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Chronicle, on 1 December 1938:

GROSE. — On the 28th of November, at Fullarton, Mary Ann, the dearly beloved wife of William Grose, of 98 Cremorne street, Unley, and late of Truro and Loveday. Aged 71 years. Loving mother of Vern, Jim, Hilda and Ida. Resting.[4]

Mary was buried at the Truro Cemetery in Truro, South Australia on 30 November 1938.[5][6]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Leader, on 1 December 1938:[6]

Two Former Truro Citizens Buried There on Monday (sic). Two former Truro residents, Mrs J. D. Jay and Mrs Wm. Grose, died on Monday and were laid to rest in Truro Cemetery, Rev. H. Turner ministering at both funerals; Mrs Jay's on Tuesday, and Mrs Grose's yesterday...
Mrs Mary Ann Grose, aged 71, also grew up at Truro, her birthplace. She was formerly Miss "Tot" Orrock; her father, Mr Robert Orrock, being the district mason who built the main hall portion of Truro Institute. Miss Orrock married Mr William Grose, and the couple went to North Adelaide, where Mr Grose was clerk for the Tramways Department. Subsequently they returned to Truro, but left some years ago to take over a store and Post Office at Loveday. Mrs Grose's declining health prompted their moving to Unley some time ago. A son. Jack, was killed by poison gas in France on April 30, 1918. while fighting with the 10th. battalion, A.I.F. Surviving with Mr Grose are two sons and two daughters: Messrs Vern and Jim, both of Loveday; Mrs M. Hunt (Hilda), also of Loveday; and Mrs Nitschke (Ida).
