In Memoriam: Finbar O Mahony was an active and generous member of WikiTree. Their presence in our community will be missed. However, their Mahony-39 many contributions will live on as part of our shared family tree. This is a gift they gave to family members, distant cousins, and future generations, and is now a permanent part of their legacy.

Biography

Name: Dr. Michael Finbar O Mahony, MBA, BA, Dip. Psych, FRPS,L

Born in Cork City, son of Sylvester O Mahony (O Mahony-41/ Sylvester O Mahony)) and Bridget Moriarty (Moriarty - 161/BridgetMoriarty).(1)

Educated at University College Cork, at University College Dublin, also at Dublin University (better known as Trinity College or TCD) and at the Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. (2)

Married Fidelma Campbell RGN, SCM, PHN in 1969.

Three adults: Sinead, Donal and Aoife and six grandchildren.

I manage the family project on 23andme, three surname projects at FTDNA and was also co-admin of the Munster Irish project at FTDNA. I have tested comprehensively: 111 markers, WTY, Big Y at FTDNA, Geno 2.0, and Full yGenome at Full Genome Corp. I have also taken the FFT with FTDNA.

For some years I have been the project administrator of the O Mahony surname yDNA project, a member of the Council of O Mahony Society, Tainiste of the O Mahonys and on Sunday 23rd June was elected Taoiseach.

My range of DNA matches suggests strong links with the Sheepshead Penninsula, the Beara Penninsula, and the Ring of Kerry. I match both the O Sullivan Mor, and the O Sullivan Beara lines and have a rich DNA connection with the O Donoghues of the Glens.

I have been researching my family for half my life (or more) and am very interested in the use of genetic genealogy in establishing links with branches of the family. I am happy to help those who are matched to me through DNA testing.

Beautiful Finbar passed away on Saturday evening in Our Lady’s Hospice surrounded by the love of his family. We will miss him dearly and know he will be missed by so many of his friends and family here also. Much love, from his wife Fidelma and children Sinéad, Dónal & Aoife ❤️

May I apologise to anyone who kindly posted a reply to my comments. I have only seen this new format for the first time tonight! I have been off this site for some months because of family and personal circumstances but am back again!
I saw your comment on Magen Bartholomeus' page, where you mention that you are related to Catherine Cronin. I am not sure how active Magen is, but Catherine's brother-in-law William Boykett was my direct ancestor, through my maternal grandmother, and I have made the Boykett line my special study.

Doug, just wanted to let you know that cousin Finbar died 21 May 2022.

Thanks, Maggie. The Relationship Finder can't find a connection to me. I can fix that, no doubt. Catherine Cronin married Charles Boykett, who settled in Melbourne, and my ancestor was his older brother William, who went to the Ballarat goldfields. It should be easy to link them up.

Hi Finbar,

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams. We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland for details. The Teams are :-

1. Categories Team
2. Counties Team
3. Managed Profiles Team
4. Membership Team
5. Profile Improvement Team
6. Topics Team
7. Diaspora

? Can you let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project and which team(s) you’d like to join. Please also let me know your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group or confirm you are already a member of the google group.

Many thanks,

Maria

Thank you for the warm welcome, Finbar.

Been searching autosomal matches between Leic Eoghain, Cork and Lough Leane, Kerry for my maternal 2nd great grandmother Catherine Sullivan-McMahon. You and I share two matches - one of whom I've been meaning to contact for some time now: Inchigeelagh Lass.

Hope this finds you and yours well ~ Michelle

I have been working, albeit slowly, on finding our DNA link through Sullivans or O'Mahonys. I found an obituary for my Cain ( Kean ) Mahony that explained his siblings better and his connection to my great-grandfather as a Uncle so I will be connecting that tree tentatively ( although seeking sources) .

Happy New Year's, Finbar !

Hi Finbar,

Thanks for your message. I was reading your work on the O'Mahonys and very concise research (-: In answer to your question, I am looking into it. Actually watching a webinar today "Making YDNA and mtDNA Part of Your Family History" at Legacy.

I will catch up with you later.

Thank you for the message! I have been working on my family tree for some time on ancestry.com and have built my tree up to 444 people and counting. I am still missing some key information like my paternal grandfather. I am unable to find anything on him other then his divorce from my paternal grandmother. I have not came across a Mary Hurley yet, but when I do, I will let you know. Wish I could import my tree from ancestry.com it would be helpful.

Hope to hear from you again!

Hello Finbar, I have been working on my Brassil family tree for more than a decade, however I hadn't cited the sources which I am now doing. I have other information on my gggm Johanna Moriarty's family which I will of course document. Johanna was from Ballylongford Co. Kerry. I have information on her brother Owen. My grandfather was the family historian but I also gleaned information from the family obituaries. Cheers for now Rionne.
Hello Finbar, my Mahonys ( and 0'Mahonys) hail from Blennersville and Milltown, County Kerry.

I see that you have taken the Y-DNA test. Would you be interested in starting a One Name Study for your surname? The purpose of the One Name Study is to coordinate any WikiTreers who are researching one particular surname and to provide a resource for collaboration.

For instructions on how to get started and suggestions for getting the most out of your study, see: One Name Study

For more information, contact Doug or Alison with any questions.
