FATAL ACCIDENT
DEATH OF MR KENNETH O’NEILL
Struck by an engine on the overhead railway bridge at the Wellington crossing at 4:50 p.m. on Monday, a sign writer suffered injuries which proved fatal two hours later (says a telegram from Marton). The victim was Mr. Kenneth O’Neill, aged 45, married, of Feilding.
Mr. O’Neill was engaged on a signwriting contract on the bridge for a local firm and failed until too late to notice the approach of a single engine. No train was due at the time and a high wind was blowing.
In running to safety, Mr O’Neill tripped over a sleeper, and the cowcatcher of the engine carried him the length of the bridge and hurled him down an embankment. He suffered fractured ribs and concussion, and was taken to a private hospital. He leaves a widow and four children.
The late Mr. Kenneth O’Neill was the second son of Mr. James O’Neill, of Wellington, and was born at Mangere. For many years he lived at Te Aroha, and was apprenticed to the firm of Messrs. McL. Wallace, Ltd. He served with the Artillery in the Great War, and on his return to New Zealand entered into business on his own account at Feilding. He was a frequent to Tauranga. Mr. Bert O’Neill, of Tauranga, is a brother of deceased. The funeral took place at Feilding yesterday. The relatives will have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
