Biography

James was born to John Mahony and Margaret Welsh about 1831.[1] He emigrated to Australia in 1853 aboard the British Queen and settled in Coleraine, Victoria. Three years later he married Catherine Murphy. They had thirteen children:

  • Dennis Joseph Mahoney, born 1873;[10]
  • Bridget Cecilia Mahoney, born 1875;[11]
  • Eliza Mahoney, born 1876;[12]
  • Jane Mahoney, born 1878;[13]
  • Daniel James Mahoney, born 1881.[14]


James died in 1881.[1]

Obituary in the Hamilton Spectator:

MAHONEY — On the 27th February, at the residence of Mr. George McMahon, Coleraine, James Mahoney, of Salt Pans, aged 50 years. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr. George McMahon, Coleraine, at 3 p.m. Tuesday evening, when friends are respectfully invited to attend.[15]
