Johann Heinrich "Henry Joseph" Nolte was baptized 14 Feb 1818 in the Catholic Church at Beverungen, Hoxter, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany.[1] His parents were Johann Wilhelm Nolte (1773-1834) and Christina Villmar aka Filmer (1780-??). Part of what made him so hard to track is that he was baptized Catholic but married in an Evangelical Church and that he lied about his birth year at his marriage, citing 1825 instead of 1818. Our speculation is that he may have done this because he was 14 years older than his bride and wanted to downplay that difference.
Fortunately his 1851 marriage record at St. Peter's in St. Louis did provide the correct birth day and month (Valentines Day) and city of origin[2]
Census data and military records provided birth dates around 1820, closer to the truth. His in St. Louis, but his census data indicates birth dates of around 1820. Many Heinrich Noltes lived in St. Louis at this time and have been eliminated as candidates but his specific immigration or auswanderung record has not been found.
Henry was a carpenter as was his father (per his own 1834 death record in Beverungen) and at least 2 of his brothers (per their marriage records near Beverungen). He appeared in various legal and land records in St. Louis building and selling houses. and registered for the Civil War in July 1863 [3]draft with a note that he was too old to serve (he may have told the truth about his age at that point). He also appeared on censuses and city directories in St. Louis after his marriage until his death.
Heinrich and Caroline Wolfrath were married at St. Peter's German Evangelical Church, Minister Johann Jacob Riess. St. Louis city marriage 23 Oct 1851[2]. Further proof of the marriage is son William's death certificate from Indiana 1941 listing Henry Nolte and and Caroline Wolfrath as parents.[4]
Their children were:
He divorced Caroline Wolfrath in Feb 1880 and lived within a mile of her and their children in St. Louis near O'Fallon Street for the rest of his life. A newspaper article on the divorce says that they were married in 1852.[5]
Henry died on 21 Oct 1886[6] as reported in the St. Louis Post Dispatch that same day on page 2:[7]
Henry Nolte, German 65 years old died at boarding house No 1006 North Third street. suddenly today and without medical attendance. He had family at Eleventh and O'Fallon street but had not lived with them for some time before his death.
He is buried at Jefferson National Barracks cemetery[8]
Larry Nolte, descendant of Heinrich, and this profile owner worked together for several years trying to track down Heinrich amongst the many Heinrich Nolte/Noltas who came from Germany to St. Louis in the 1800s. Larry's knowledge of St. Louis history and ability to pull threads of information from the tangled balls of yarn that is genealogy are remarkable.
