Biography

When Bertha Nolte was born on 17 October 1891, in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, United States, her father, Fred Nolte, was 35 and her mother, Emma Zinn, was 31.

Her family was living in Dayton, Ohio on what appears to be 317 E Haynes St. [1] when the US Census was performed on 5 June 1900. The family consisted of her parents, Fred and Emma, and Bertha's 5 siblings; Ernest - 15, Anna - 11, Henry - 9, Bertha E - 8, Herman - 6, and Charley who was 2. Her mother, Emma had one child deceased. Both of her parents were born in Germany. Her parents had been married 15 years and they immigrated in 1882 and 1883. Her father had become a naturalized citizen. He supported his family as a stone mason. Her father owned the home they resided in, with a mortgage. Bertha was enrolled in school and she and her older siblings were all able to read and write as were her parents.

John Kindle interviewed the Nolte family on April 18th, 1910, for the Census Bureau. He recorded them as living at 1832 E Richard Street, Dayton, Ohio. Richard Street was in the 8th Ward of Dayton at that time. The family is the same number, but different members. Anna has married and Ruth is now the baby of the family. She is 6 years old. Bertha is now 18 years old and working as a typist in an office. Mr. Nolte owns this home, and he is carrying a mortgage on it as well.

She married John Bach before 1917, in Ohio, United States based upon a 1917 Dayton City Directory. They were the parents of at least 2 sons.

The 1920 Census was performed on January 14th. Bertha E and her husband, John were living at what appears to be 242 McDaniel Street, Dayton, Ohio. [2] They were renting the home. John was working as a plumber and Bertha was keeping the house in order.

Bertha and John were living at 263 Geneva Rd, Dayton, Ohio on April 11th, 1930, when Mrs. Eva Proctor visited on behalf of the US Census Department. [3] They own this home, it has a value of $7000.00 and they have a radio set. They now have two children, sons, named Jack U. and Jerry L. They are 8 and 2 years old. John is still working as a plumber.

Bertha and John are now living in a rented home at 107 Bellaire Avenue, Dayton in 1940 when the Census was performed on April 5th. [4] We learn on this Census that Bertha had completed the 8th grade. John continues to work as a plumber and Jack has joined him in the trade.

Marjorie Adams conducted the 1950 Census on April 26th. The Bach's continued to live 107 Bellaire Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. Bertha's brother, Henry has lived with them for the past 10 years or at least he was listed on both the 1940 and 1950 Census with them. He is listed as being divorced. John continues to work as a plumber, he is listed as the owner of the service now. Bertha continues her occupation of keeper of the home.

Bertha and John would divorce in April 1955. She never remarried.

She died on 20 August 1971, in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, United States.

Research Notes

  • See FamilySerch.org profile 9DTR-6BP [5]
  • Note; There appears to be two Berthas. One was Bertha A and our Bertha E. There was a Bertha who was a resident of St. Elizabeth's Hospital for a period between 1898 and 1910. There was also a Bertha A who once was residing at 140 Hodges St. with the family of Bertha E. I'm pretty certain there are two Berthas and they are related. How, I don't know at this time. I have included sourcing for both, allowing the reader to determine for themselves.
