Blue Mountain Gazette (Katoomba, NSW : 1903 - 1904), Fri 12 Jun 1903, Page 7, FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE RAILWAY STATION[4].
FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE RAILWAY STATION.
WILLIAM NIXON KILLED.
On Saturday evening last the residents of Katoomba received a shock when the news spread that a man had been run over by a goods train at the level crossing at about 8.30 p.m.
It is only about 18 months ago that Mr. Robt. Mulholland was knocked down and killed in almost the same spot as Saturday's accident happened. So that this one called to mind that of a few months, and should go to prove that the level crossing at Katoomba station is the most dangerous on the mountains, and should in some way be attended to.
From the meagre particulars that can be obtained it is hard to say how the accident really happened. It appears Nixon was crossing the line at the level crossing as a goods train known as No. 53 was approaching the station from Sydney. As the train was coming in very slowly, and against the heavy gale blowing, it would be impossible to hear a train until almost on one. This appears to be what really happened, and in attempting to rush across Nixon was knocked down and the whole train passed over him. He was horribly mutilated, both legs being almost severed from the body, and terribly smashed, besides other wounds about head and body. Dr. Spark was very quickly on the scene, and the injured man removed to Mr. Bashford's hotel, where everything possible was done. Nixon was removed to the Nepean Cottage Hospital, but died a few hours after being admitted.
