Charles Herdman Newton (1891-1942) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on the 3rd January 1891.

He was the son of a landowner Robert Newton Herdman Newton and Maude Louise Macfarlane.
The family lived at 35 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh when Charles was born

but before 1901 had moved to 3 Eglinton Crescent, Edinburgh

He was educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh before going to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1910.

He then attended Edinburgh University where he obtained his MB & ChB in 1915.

He immediately joined the Royal Army Medical Corps initially as a temporary Lieutenant, serving for a while aboard the hospital ship Galeka.

He married on the 15th February 1916 at St John the Evangelist, Edinburgh to Anne Dorothy Anderson and the wedding was a quiet one due to the ongoing war.

He served in the R.A.M.C. until 1919, after which they moved to Pitlochry in Perthshire where he worked for the next 20 years. He was an honorary surgeon to the L.M.S. Ambulance Brigade, certifying factory surgeon, and medical officer to three adjacent parishes. He was also President of the Perth branch of the British Medical Association between 1940-1941.

He died suddenly aged 51 years on the 5th January 1942 in Pitlochry.
