Biography

Charles Herdman Newton (1891-1942) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on the 3rd January 1891. [1] He was the son of a landowner Robert Newton Herdman Newton and Maude Louise Macfarlane.

The family lived at 35 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh when Charles was born [2] but before 1901 had moved to 3 Eglinton Crescent, Edinburgh [3]

He was educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh before going to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1910. [4] He then attended Edinburgh University where he obtained his MB & ChB in 1915. [1] [5]

He immediately joined the Royal Army Medical Corps initially as a temporary Lieutenant, serving for a while aboard the hospital ship Galeka. [6]

He married on the 15th February 1916 at St John the Evangelist, Edinburgh to Anne Dorothy Anderson and the wedding was a quiet one due to the ongoing war. [7]

Ambulance Brigade, certifying factory surgeon, and medical officer to three adjacent parishes. He was also President of the Perth branch of the British Medical Association between 1940-1941. [1]

He died suddenly aged 51 years on the 5th January 1942 in Pitlochry. [1]
