Francis C. Newell was the son of Abel Pond Newell (1818-1904) and Mary Elizabeth Christian (1824-1888). [1]
The family received 47 letters from Francis while he was serving his country from August 1861 to August 1863.
"he told his parents over and over again that he would stay as long as he had to. In an excerpt from his last letter, dated August 7th 1863, he writes, "If I should live, and they should want me longer, I am just the boy that will go for 10 years if it is necessary for I don't think that we shall see any harder times nor any harder fighting than we have seen. The 11th (Regiment) has got a glowering name here."
Civil War
Francis C. Newell was 5'8" tall, brown hair, blue eyes and was a farmer. He enlisted at the age of 17, and was from Winnebago, Illinois. Francis enlisted on 15 August 1861 and was mustered into Company D, 11th Regiment, Illinois Infantry.
Pvt. Newell died from disease on 21 August 1863 at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana. He initially was buried in Louisiana, he is buried in Section A, 3014 of the Vicksburg National Cemetery.[2]
