Richard Newby, father of early Quaker leader and preacher Anne Newby, is believed to be the Richard Nubie, son of Robart Nubie, baptized 1 May 1594 at Kendal, Westmorland, England.[1][2] Another Richard Newbie is baptized Kendal, Westmorland on 27 Feb 1581/82[3] but this would place him in his 40s by the time the children of Richard Newby are being born.
Richard's date of death or burial has not been identified and no will has yet been found. He is last recorded as alive in 1652 when he heard George Fox preach, along with his daughter Anne and son-in-law John Audland and was 'convinced.'[4]
The surname is seen with a variety of spelling variations to include Newby, Newbie, Nuby, and Nubie.
Wife
The wife of Richard Newby is unknown and his daughter Anne never mentions her in her writings. A marriage between a Richard Newbie and Dorothie Hilton is recorded at "Cumbiria"[5] and a Richard Newby marries a Jane Hodgson 5 Oct 1621 at "Cumbria."[6] The geographic location of these two records being simply Cumbria is too vague to make any assessment although the second of these marriages more readily fits with the first of the probable children.
Probable Children
The following children appear to belong to the same family group and all are identified in the baptismal record as the children of Richard. The origin of the register from which the Family Search data comes is not given as other than Kendal, Westmorland. These are baptismal dates and not birth dates.

Note that Cumbria did not exist at this time as an administrative district but this record appears to be a duplicate of the one for Kendal, Westmorland but perhaps from a different source.

Lovely work on the Valiant 60 profiles! Perhaps at some point we can find a connection for Richard and Anne to William Newby, b.a. 1592, whose son Ralph was also convinced.
I've wondered the same thing and had expectations of perhaps finding a connection when I began working on this particular profile. What could be worth investigation is how common was the Newby name (in all its variations) and was it found more prominently in the north than other places. Maybe worth a G2G to get the input of our England project colleagues?
