"In summer 1846, records show that the Michael Bohr family traveled on the ship Diadem along with Catherine's brother, John Peter Nett. Family lore tells of a tumultuous journey that culminated in a sea-rescue, during which the family was split up: Catherine and two of her children (Anna Maria and John Peter) settled in Detroit, Michael Bohr and John Peter Nett traveled to the Erie Canal (and eventually made it to Detroit), and ten-year-old Maria Elisabeth Bohr ended up in Milwaukee, presumed an orphan and taken in by a sailor's family. The now-four members of the Bohr family quickly made a home in the wilderness of Detroit, where they lived in a log cabin. Michael Bohr continued working as a farmer, as he had in Prussia. Sometime before 1854, the Bohr family found out that Elisabeth Bohr was alive and well in Wisconsin; she returned to Detroit before marrying and permanently relocating to Wisconsin, having made her life across the lake. Anna Maria Bohr married a fellow German immigrant, and they lived with Michael and Catherine before moving to their own cabin on the same lot. Michael Bohr died of old age in Hamtramck, Michigan on June 27, 1872"

"Catherine was widowed when Michael died in 1872. She subsequently lived with her son, Peter, and his family in Stearns, Minnesota.^{[citation needed]} Catherine also remained in contact with her daughter Elisabeth, and went to visit her and her family in 1887, where she passed away on April 20 in Forest, Wisconsin. She is buried near her daughter and son-in-law at the Och's family plot in Fond du Lac"
