Biography

Mark Nemanic has Slavic Roots.

Marcus Nemanic was born 17 Jul 1868 [1] and left his home in Bozakova Slovenia about 1889. With his father's death and the requirement for all men to join the Austrio-Hungarian army, it was easy to see why he left his country. He came to the United States about 1890 and traveled to California. He received his naturalization in San Francisco, California in 1899.

Marcus worked as a laborer with no specific skills listed. His brother Anton was a miner in Leadville and later in Utah but this was what Marcus left behind in Slovenia and it appears he did not want to pursue. While in Leadville, Colorado, Anton was married to Margaret Nemanic, a marriage arranged by her father, Marcus Nemanic. Note that Margaret's maiden name was Nemanic but she was from Suhor.

I do not know who suggested it but the family arranged another marriage between Marcus and Margaret's sister Barbara. Barbara was escorted through Ellis Island by her brother-in-law Mark Russ in 1903. Marcus and Barbara married at the Church of the Nativity in San Francisco, California on 26 Jun 1904. Their first of three daughters, Mary, was born in April of 1905.

The 1906 Great Earthquake and Fire destroyed their home. They became refugees on Potrero Hill. As with all San Franciscans of the time they had an earthquake story. The earthquake damaged their home south of Market but the fire destroyed everything. While camping on the hill Barbara got a cinder in her eye. Mark lit a lantern to see to get it out. A soldier came along and ordered the lantern out or Mark would be shot.

By 1910 they were renting on Rhode Island Street on the Hill. Mark was able to buy a house at 741 Rhode Island where they remained and he raised his three daughters, Mary, Anna, and Josephine.

In the 1920's Mark was working on an elevator and suffered a stroke. Mary was still at home, working as a book binder, and took care of her mother and father. When Mary married Frank Rahmer she moved out but only a few blocks away on the Hill.

Marcus died in 1940 at the age of 70. He never returned to his native homeland, he had made San Francisco his home,He was buried in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma, San Mateo County, California, USA.

He told his granddaughter that when he first got off the ship in the US he set his suit case down beside him and someone stole it so all that he had was thanks to America.

Research Notes

I have determined the names of Marko's parents. The Slovenian/Austrian registry shows his father as Georg Nemanic and his mother as Maria Nemanic. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for the parents to determine if Maria's LNAB was Nemanic. Menaic is a common name and there are several marriages between Nemanics. I have noted that his marriage record at the Church of the Nativity in San Francisco lists his parents as Georgii and Mariae. The funeral paperwork also lists his father as George Nemanich. Also note the last name changes. The original Slovenian would have had a mark over the last 'C' making it a 'tch' sound.
