Biography

Elizabeth Neale born 1704 in Charles County, Maryland. Daughter of Raphael Neale Neale-1215 and Mary Brooke Brooke-1705. Died before her father, Raphael Neale, made his will 20 July 1743, on "NEALE'S GIFT" in Rock Point, Charles County, Maryland.

Maryland Genealogies, Vol. II., Neale Family of Charles County, p. 259: Raphael Neale and Mary (Brooke) his wife had issue:

  1. Elizabeth Neale, dead in 1743, mar. John Lancaster.
  2. Mary Neale, mar. Thomas Taney, who d. 1762.
  3. Henrietta Neale, d. 1774; mar. Basil Brooke (b.16 Nov. 1717; d. 1761).
  4. Ann Neale, mar. James Thompson.
  5. Monica Neale, mar. Edward Digges.
  6. Eleanor Neale, mar. Bennet Hoskins (d. 1734).

7 May 1731, Elizabeth Neale married Captain John Lancaster, mariner.

Captain John Lancaster, his wives are surmised by the adding of property to John Lancaster:

  1. Married first, Elizabeth Neale, 7 May 1731, when they received from her parents "Neale's Gift" 494 acres in Charles County, Maryland, a part of 2000 acres patented to Captain James Neale in 1642 called "Wolleston Manor"; Elizabeth Neale is daughter of Raphael Neale and Mary Brooke and granddaughter of Anthony Neale, great granddaughter of Captain James Neale; Elizabeth died before her father, Raphael Neale, made his will 20 July 1743. Children of John Lancaster and Elizabeth Neale: John, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, Raphael, Catherine.
  2. Married second, Mary Gardiner, daughter of John Gardiner and Mary Boarman; Mary Gardiner's mother married second George Slye; in 1743 Mary Lancaster is given a portion of property from her brother's estate [Wifred Gardiner] called "Hilleley" and "Canoe Neck"; in 1744 she is also mentioned in her mother's will [Mary Boarman Gardiner Slye]; Mary Gardiner Lancaster dies by 1750 as John Lancaster was paying rent on "Hilleley" 250 acres and "St. Clements Manor" 400 acres from the Gerard family to the Slye family to Mary Gardiner Lancaster. She also owned some of "Chancellors Point" land given to her from her parents. "Hilleley," "Canoe Neck," and "Chancellors Point" all properties in St. Mary's County, Maryland. There was no issue from this marriage.
  3. Married third, Mary Slye Neale, widow of Henry Neale, son of James Neale and Elizabeth Lord. She was the daughter of Gerard Slye and his first wife Sarah Vansweringen. It is surmised Mary Slye Neale married John Lancaster by 1 June 1752 because of an agreement referred to in Charles County, Maryland, Register of Wills, Administration Accounts, John Lancaster's Final Account, 1759-1770, pages 310-311....."and whereas there is due to Mary Lancaster widow of the deceased as appl. by marriage contract bearing date first day of June 1752 which contract is confirmed by the deceased will....one third part or the balance of the deceased estate exclusive of the negroes; one third to the widow is L151.19.4". There was no issue from this marriage.

Rock Hall "NEALES GIFT" the ancestral home of the Lancaster family, originally "GILLS LAND." "NEALES GIFT" a 494-acre gift to John Lancaster and Elizabeth Neale from her parents on their wedding day in 1731.

Children of John Lancaster and first wife Elizabeth Neale:

  1. John Lancaster, b. 1732; mar. Mary Neale, dau. of Benjamin Neale & Mary Edelen, granddaughter of James Neale & Elizabeth Lord; d. 1794 in Charles County, Maryland.
  2. Mary Lancaster, b. 1733; mar. first to Captain Richard Holmes, mariner, of Liverpool, England, issue John Holmes 1749-1778; mar. second, Henry Bradford 1728-1784.
