Edwin Greenslade Murphy was born on December 12, 1866 in Castlemaine, [1] Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Edward Murphy and Helen Greenslade. His birth was registered the following year in 1867 [2].
He grew up in Victoria. and later, went to Westem Australia when the gold rush started at Coolgardie[3].
When quite young, Dryblower showed that he had a good voice and eagerly joined up with church choirs. Although, he often admitted that he was a young outlaw.[4].
Edwin's marriage to Emma Eleanor Lowndes was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1895 in the Hackney district [5][6] Edwin's Find a Grave page, (refers [6] ADB), they married on 25 September 1895[7].
His best-known song was This Bit of the World Belongs To Us, which was written when the American Fleet visited Australia[3].
Later he Joined the staff of the Kalgoorlie Sun. About 1900 he joined the Sunday Times, Perth and stayed with them up to the time of his death in 1939[3][8].
Murphy had been ill for about a year when he died in 1939. He was survived by a widow and three married sons—Messrs. Harry M. Murphy, Edwin H. Murphy and Charles C Murphy. [8]. He was buried at Karakatta Cemetery[9].
This exuberant raconteur was thickset and ginger haired with an aggressive turned-up nose; he was drawn by a cartoonist in 1907 with full drooping moustache, thumbs stuck boastfully in his waistcoat, straw boater and tight stove-pipe trousers. He died of cancer at East Perth on 9 March 1939, survived by his wife and three sons of his five children; 'Dryblower' was buried in the Anglican section of Karrakatta cemetery, having left an estate of £288. . . more from ADoB, and photo . . His wife Emma Eleanor passed away in 1958 in Daglish, Western Australia [10].
