Eleanor de Mowbray was the daughter of John de Mowbray, Knt., 3rd Lord Mowbray, and his wife, Joan of Lancaster, daughter of Henry of Lancaster, Knt., Earl of Lancaster and Leicester and grandson of Henry III, King of England (see Research Note, below).[1][2][3][4] Eleanor's date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated based on the date of her parents marriage (before June 1328).
Marriages and Children
Eleanor married first Roger la Warre, Knt., 3rd Lord Warre,[1] son and heir of John La Warre, Knt., and Margaret de Holand, before 23 July 1358 (date of settlement). Richardson states that Eleanor was Roger's second wife,[2]Complete Peerage asserts that she was his third wife.[4] They had two sons and one daughter:
NOTE: Roger also had a daughter, Katherine, whose maternity is uncertain.[2]
Roger La Warre died in Gascony 27 August 1370, leaving a will dated 28 April 1368 and proved 5 October 1370.[2][4]
Eleanor married second Lewis Clifford, K.G.,[1] before 13 October 1372[4] (date of presentment to Ashton-under-Lyne church, a Warre holding).[2] They had one son:
Eleanor, Lady la Warre, died testate before 18 June 1387[4] and her husband, Sir Lewis Clifford died 5 December 1404, leaving a will dated 17 September 1404 and proved 5 December 1404.[2]
