William Dudley Mott was born on 30 November 1873 in Whatley, Clarke County, Alabama, United States.[1][2] He was the son of Joseph B. Mott (abt.1848-aft.1900) and Nancy Elizabeth (Daniel) Mott (~1852 - 1940).[3][4]
An 1880 United States Census has not been located.
William Dudley Mott was married to Leoma "Lomie" Naomie Foreman on 31 March 1895 in Clarke County, Alabama.[5] They were the parents of at least 6 children.[2]
When the 1900 United States Census was taken, Dudley Mott, Leoma, and their family were living at 511 Claiborn Street in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama. Dudley was working as a flagman for the railroad.[6]
The Mott family moved to Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. They were enumerated there on the 1910 United States Census. Their home was located at 92 Florence Street. According to the record, Leoma Mott had given birth to 6 children, but only 3 were still living. Those 3 living children were listed in their household on the 1910 census. William D. Mott was working as a flagman for Southern Railroad.[7]
The name of Florence Street in Selma was changed to Alabama Avenue. The Mott family were living there at house number 2713 when the 1920 United States Census was taken. Their 3 adult children were living with them as well as a granddaughter. William D. Mott was still working as a flagman for the railroad.[8]
William D. Mott's wife Leoma died on 30 December 1927 following an illness of two years duration.[9]
William D. Mott and Sarah Addie Dunkin (aka Duncan) were married on 16 June 1928 in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama at the home of the bride on Griffin Street.[10][11] They were the parents of at least 4 children.[2]
When the 1930 United States Census was taken, the William D. Mott household was living at 2523 Alabama Avenue. Household members included William D., his second wife, Addie, his widowed Aunt Josephine Daniel, his brother-in-law Elsie G. Meeks, and his sister-in-law Lula Meeks. William D. Mott was still working as a flagman for the railroad.[12]
William D. Mott and his family moved from Dallas County, Alabama to Perry County, Alabama sometime after 1935. They were enumerated on the 1940 United States Census living in Radfordville in Perry County. William D. and Addie Mott were then the parents of 4 children who were recorded in their household. William D.'s aunt Josephine (Daniel) Kelly was still living with them. William D. Mott had retired from railroad after more than 50 years of service and had taken up farming.[2][13]
William Dudley Mott was of the Baptist faith.[2]
After he became sick, William Dudley Mott moved back to Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. Not too long after, he died there in a local hospital on 29 August 1940. He was 66 years old.[3] He was buried in New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Dallas County, Alabama.[2][14]
