One of the earliest Saffron Walden, Essex, England, records[1] is the burial of this John Mott's father, John Mott 17 October 1580. There is a note that he was also known as John Walhed. So a search was made of the surname Walhed and its spelling variants. There is a reference to another John Mott alias Waylehead who married 1624. Also a similarly named family of children (Adam, James, Sara, John) who were baptized Walhedd and then married as Mott at the appropriate time. All this confirms that the Walhead entries were for the Mott family.
The John Mott/Walhead buried in 1580 was probably the same John Walhed who married Agnes Tailor. :7 May 1569. They had children including our subject.
29 January 1592/3 John Walhed married Johane Hollis. Children of John Walhead were baptized. Four of them subsequently married as "Mott."
On 4 Oct 1609 John Wallhead married Em Rynold which means that Johane died previously to this.
There are other unplaced burials for the "wife of John" and another daughter. It cannot be determined positively that these records belong to this John.
Austin in his Rhode Island Genealogical Dictionary missed the presence of John Mott, the father of Adam Mott and he assigned the early records to John Mott, Adams’ son.[2] This was later corrected in two articles in The American Genealogist.[3][4]
John Mott and Adam Mott were admitted, 1 Oct 1638, as inhabitants of “Aqueedneck, having submitted themselves to the Government that is or shall be established, according to the word of God therein.”[5][3]
John Mott’s land is mentioned in the 9th mo of 1639[6] and then again, May 1644, Goodman Mott, Lt. Samford, and Goodman Bourden, or any two of them were requested, by the town of Portsmouth, to “accommodate Adam mott at the upper end of his fathers lott and Samuell wilson at ye upper end of his owne.”[7][3] The same group of three men were to cut the lot of Henry Knowles shorter.[8]
Beginning 29 Aug 1644 and continuing until John’s death, the town began providing for olde John Mott. Each year (1644, 1648-1657) someone in town agreed, for a fee, to provide food, lodging, washing, etc. at the town’s expense. For instance in 1649, “Adam mott having offered a Cowe for ever and 5 bushels of Corne by the yeare so longe as the ould man shall live, towards his mayntenance that so he might be dischardged from any further chardge: the towne every man that was free therto; settinge downe what Corne thay would give for this present yeare made up that 5 bushels 40 bushels and so it was Concluded that mr William Balston should have the 40 bushels of Corne, and the use of the aforenamed Cowe this present yeare for which mr Balstone undertake to keep ould father mott this present yeare and alowe him house rome dyate lodging and washinge.”[9] The 1656 entry specifically states the relationship between Adam and John. “John Teft ... to keep John mott this yeare for dyat lodging washing and looking to besyde the Cowe and the corne that the ould mans son adam is ingaged to give.”[10][11][3]
In 1652, besides a caretaker “it is further agreed that there shalbe a stone house built for the more Comfortabl beinge of ould John mott in the winter for the effectinge there of the townes men doe here promise that upon the Call of the overseers aforesayed, thay will Come in and helpe forward the worke”[12][3]
Two years later, 23 Jan 1654. “It is agreed that the towne wilbee at the Charge to pay ould John motts passage to the Barbades Iland and back againe if he Cannot be received there, if he live to it, if the Shipp owners will carrie him.”[13][3] There is nothing further in the record concerning this. Was there family in the Barbadoes?
John died between 8 June 1657 (“Mr Baulston is to speak to goodman Teift for keeping Ould mott for the year ensuing and pay him out of the treasury.”)[14] and 6 Jan 1657/8 (“Treasurer to pay goodman Teift what is due to him for keepinge ould mott , with what other just demaunds is due to the sayd Teift about ould mott”)[15]

The American Genealogist Vol. 20, page 227-228 : MOTT, Adam (p344, 1st col.) was the son of "oulde John Mott" who was admitted a freeman at Aquidneck in 1638.
But that ancestry appears to be problematic. So I am going detach that father John, so that this profile can be merged with the one showing the father as Mark. That will allow the long chain of descendants to then be cleanly merged. But I am going to leave the alternate father John attached as husband of Frances Gutter, for furthter review later.
