Biography

Kate Edith Mosley was born on May 12, 1867, at Kidderpore or Ballygunge, Calcutta, West Bengal, India. She was a daughter of Thomas Henry Mosley and Elizabeth Ann Hayward Mosley. She was baptized at Kidderpore on July 4, 1967.

At the time of the UK census in 1871, Kate and her older sister Eliza were living at The Rectory, Loxbear, Devon, England, under the tutelage of the Rector of Loxbear.

Kate became a midwife and a nurse and she never married. We know of her whereabouts over the next 60+ years as follows:

  • At the time of the UK census for 1891 she was living with her mother and two of her siblings at 54 Burlington Road, Paddington, London, England
  • In 1905 she was living at Pension Fink in Cairo, Egypt, and appears to have been working as a midwife
  • At the time of the UK census in 1911 she was living at 5 Templeton Place, Earls Court, Kensington, London; she lists her occupation as "Hospital trained and certificated sick nurse"
  • From May to December 1916 she served as a nursing sister for the British Committee of the French Red Cross during World War I
  • On March 19, 1919, she embarks, at London, on the "Kildonan Castle" en route to Egypt via Port Said; she lists her occupation as "Hospital sister"
  • On July 11, 1922, she arrives at Tilbury, London, from Egypt via Port Said aboard the SS "Orsova", listing her intended address in London as the Craven Hotel, 22 Craven Road, London; she gives her occupation as "Certified nurse".
  • In 1930 and 1932 she is living in London at 32 Lancaster Gate, Paddington, and then at 221 Grace Street, Paddington; she has probably retired as a nurse by those dates

Kate died in 1940 and her death was registered in Hendon, Middlesex, England, in the October quarter of that year. She was buried on December 3, 1940, at Camden, London.
