Biography

Asa Moseley was born between 1800 and 1803 and died 1857 in Marion, Williamson Co, Illinois. He was a son of Drewry and Millie Burnett Moseley. Asa went to Illinois with his family when he was quite young, but he returned to Wilson Co, Tennessee to marry Frances Moseley Ligon on 19 Feb. 1828[1]. James Stratton co-signed their marriage bond. He was a cousin of Frances from Va. Frances was born 2 Oct. 1800 in Powhatan Co, Va. and died 1877 in Marion, Williamson Co, Ill. She was given Moseley for a middle name because it was the maiden name of her father's mother. Frances was the daughter of William Ligon (also spelled Liggon and Legan. A direct descendant says Ligon is correct), born 24 Nov. 1760 (one source says 1762) in Va. and died 4 Mar 1841 in Owen Co, Kentucky and Ann Davenport born 1766 in Cumberland Co, Va. (later Powhatan Co, Va.) and died about 1850 in Owen Co, Kentucky. William and Ann were married on 27 Dec. 1784 in Powhatan Co, Va. Frances was their seventh (of eleven) child. Asa and Frances lived in Wilson Co. for several years, but about 1837 they moved to Owen Co, Kentucky. where Frances' parents lived. Sometime between 1840 and 1850 they moved to Williamson Co, Illinois for they are on the 1840 Owen Co. Federal census and on the 1850 Williamson Co. Federal census. When they moved to Ill, they had 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. At least one (Greenberry Snoddy) and maybe more were from Frances' first marriage to Graham Snoddy. Frances married Graham Snoddy on 26 May 1817 in Sumner Co, Tennessee. Graham was the son of William Snoddy Sr. and Margaret McNeely. He was born about 1800 in Sumner Co, Tennessee and died in 1851 in Lincoln Co, Tn. He and Frances were divorced, date not known. Jerry Byers (a direct descendent of Graham and Frances) said that from printed matter (he doesn't say what printed matter) it is said that Frances and husband Asa Moseley entered Illinois with 8 children. That would mean three of hers and Graham Snoddy's and 5 of hers and Asa Moseley's. Jerry adds that this has not been proven. The only child I know about is their son, Greenberry T. Snoddy, who was born in 1825 in Sumner Co, Tn. Jerry also states that the Snoddy family lived in Williamson Co, and most of them are buried in the Coal Banks Cemetery in Crab Orchard Township. He also states that the name Greenberry was a popular name in the early 1800s and that it was probably given in honor of the revolutionary hero, General Nathaniel Green, who served with General Washington's forces.

Asa and Frances Moseley Ligon Snoddy Moseley had at least five children. They were: 1. Nancy E. Moseley who was born in 1835 (one source says 1830) probably in Wilson Co, Tn. and died about 1870 in Williamson Co, Ill. She married James R. Adams about 1851 probably in Crab Orchard, Williamson Co, Ill. Nancy and James had at least three children who were all born in Crab Orchard, Williamson Co, Ill.: Sarah F. Moseley was born 1854, James C. Moseley born 1856, and Amanda C. Moseley born 1858. Her mother, Frances Moseley Ligon Moseley was living with her in 1860. Her father had died in 1857.

2. Louisa Moseley was born in about 1833 in Wilson Co, Tennessee. 3. John Henry Moseley was born in 28 Dec 1832 in Wilson Co. Tennessee and died 9 238 Nov. 1906 in Burnside, Pulaski Co, Kentucky. One source says he died in Williamson Co Ill. He was buried in Simmons Cemetery, Stonefort, Williamson Co, Illinois. He was a farmer. He lived at home until he was 18 (1851) when he went to Tennessee to help move his Uncle Joseph Ligon to Illinois. Two years later (age 20 - 1853) he went to Owen Co, Kentucky. where he stayed for a short time. When he was 21 he went to Madison Co, Illinois where he worked as a teamster. He fought in the Civil War on the side of the north. He entered the US Army Co C 31st Ill. Infantry on 18 Sep 1861 and served three years. He was in several battles and was wounded, but probably not badly or he would have been sent home. After the war he lived in Union Township, Pope Co, Illinois. He was a Baptist and voted Republican. He might have married four times. The information I have found about his marriages must be wrong for if it is right, there are times when he had more than one wife. According to what I have found he married Eliza Pittman in 1855. She died in 1865. He married Delila Glenn in 1858. He divorced her in 1879. He married Elizabeth Cobeth Caldwell in 1866. He divorced her in 1869. And he married Phoebe M. Austin in 1856 (Jerry Byers says about 1893, but John Henry and Phoebe had children in 1857, 1859, and 1865.) If this information is correct, then after his marriage in 1856, he was married to two or three women at a time until 1879. Eliza died on 26 Oct. 1865 at the age of 28 so she was born in 1837 or 1838 depending on whether her birthday was before or after 26 Oct. She probably died in Kentucky. - probably in Union Co. or Pulaski Co. Her parents were William and Margaret Parks Pittman who lived in Burnside, Pulaski, Kentucky and later moved to Graves Co, Kentucky where Eliza was born. The Pittmans came to Illinois in 1848. John Henry and Eliza had at least five children. The first four were probably born in Illinois, but may have been born in Kentucky.

 Angeline Moseley born about 1855.

 John Darnell Moseley was born about 1857

 C. Frank Mullin Moseley was born about 1859

 Jenny Moseley was born about 1861

 F. Green T. Moseley was born about 1863 in Union Co, Ky. (Pope Co. Illinois is just across the Kentucky border from Union Co, Kentucky.) Jerry Byers says one of their children died in Mar. 1862 while he was in the army, but does not say which child died. It may have been one of these five or another child whose name I do not have. About 1856, John Henry married Phoebe M. Austin. At this time he was still married to Eliza so maybe he committed bigamy. Maybe he just had another family without marriage because I base the statement that he married Phoebe about 1856 on the fact that he and she had a child in 1857. It is possible that Eliza never lived in Pulaski Co. and did not know about his other family. Also, it is possible that the children were from Phoebe's first marriage to a Mr. Showers and that when she and John Henry married sometime after Eliza's death and his divorce from Elizabeth, the children adopted their step father's surname. In the sources that I found, three children are listed as belonging to him and Phoebe. They were all born in Burnside, Pulaski Co, Kentucky.

 J.P. Moseley was born in 1857.

 (first name not known) Moseley was born 15 Apr. 1859.

 Jeune Moseley was born 18 Jan 1865. I did not find any source that said he divorced Phoebe and I do not know when or where she died. The sources I found also said he married Delila Glenn about 1858 probably in Burnside, Pulaski Co, Kentucky. He would have still been married to Eliza and to Phoebe. As far as I know, he and Delila had no children. They divorced in 1879. John Henry also married Elizabeth Cobeth Caldwell in Feb. of 1866 in Burnside, Pulaski. At this time he would have still been married to Delila as they were not divorced until 1879. Elizabeth was born about 1845 probably in Pulaski Co, Kentucky. Jerry Byers stated that Elizabeth was a sister of J.C. Caldwell. Which J.C.? Did he mean John Calhoun Caldwell? John Henry and Elizabeth had at least one child, Henry Moseley, who was born 16 Nov. 1866 in Burnside, Pulaski, Ky. Elizabeth and John Henry was divorced in 1869. Divorces were not common in those days, but John Henry divorced two women -maybe three if he divorced Phoebe. I do not know where Elizabeth died. More research needs to be done to straighten out all these marriages.

- Martha H. Moseley was born in 1835 or 1836 (based on 1850 census where she is listed as being 14 – year depends on whether her birthday was before or after census was taken.) in Wilson Co, Tennessee. She went to Williamson Co, Illinois with her family where she met and married James R. Adams in 1834.

- George B. Moseley was born 20 May 1838 in Owens Co, Kentucky. He married Martha Ann Turner on 15 Sep 1857 in Williamson Co, Illinois. Martha was born in 1834 or 1835 depending on whether she had a birthday before or after the 1860 census was taken. I do not know her place of birth or her parents' names. George was a farmer. On 30 Aug. 1862 in Bethel, Tn. he enlisted in Co. F 49th Ill. Infantry to fight on the northern side.

George and Martha had eight children who were all born in Benton, Franklin Co, Illinois:

-Frances Elizabeth Moseley was born in 1858.

-James B. Moseley was born 28 Dec 1861.

-Nicholas Moseley was born about 1863.

-Charles Franklin Moseley was born 15 Oct 1864 and died after 1925.

-Rufus S. Moseley was born 6 Aug. 1869 and died before 1915.

-Christia G. Moseley was born 21 July 187` and died after 1916.

-Rasa Moseley was born 13 Apr. 1877. Martha Ann Turner Moseley died in 1899 in Benton, Franklin Co, Illinois. After she died, George married Mary Elizabeth Royal Hughes. She was the widow of William James Hughes. Mary was born about 1842 probably in Franklin Co, Ill. George B. Moseley died on 15 Sep. 1857 in Benton. I don't know when or where Mary died.
