"Dutch" Morial was American political figure and a leading civil rights advocate. He was the first African-American Mayor of New Orleans. the first African-American to graduate from the Louisiana State University Law School, and the first African-American to be elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in the 20th century. Ernest Nathan "Dutch" Morial was born on 9 Oct 1929 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, United States. He was a son of Walter Etienne Morial Sr. (1889 - 1968) and Leonie Viola (Moore) Morial (1894 - 1976).[3]
In the 1930 census Ernest (age 6) was the single son of Walter Morial in Touro, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, United States.[4]
He graduated from Xavier University in 1951, and Louisiana State University Law School in 1954.
Ernest married Sybil Haydel in 1955 in Boston , Mass.[5]
He spent two years with the Armv Intelligence Corps, and when he returned, eventually became the president of the New Orleans chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1962 until 1965. when he became an assistant United States attorney.[1]
In 1967, he was the first African Amercan elected to the Louisiana House in modern times. In 1969, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the New Orleans City Council. In 1972, he was appointed a juvenile court judge, and was elected to the Court of Appeal in 1972. He was elected Mayor of New Orleans in November of 1977. [1]
Ernest died on 24 Dec 1989 aged 60.[3]
Convention Center: In 1992 a convention center was named for Ernest N. Morial,[6] but was later renamed the "New Orleans Morial Convention Center". During Hurricane Katrina it was the second most important shelter for survivors and served as a temporary medical clinic for some time[7]
Awards: In honor of Ernest N. Morial as a citizen, civil rights activist, and political pioneer, the Award recognizes large and small businesses and promote economic growth of the local small business community. [8]
