  • Phillips is not the daughter of Sarah Morgans Williams. The Find A Grave memorial for Sarah's husband David X Williams shows that he was married a second time to Esther Jones. Elizabeth was the daughter of Esther (Elizabeth's death certificate). The father was given as David Williams but he may not be the David X Williams who was married to Sarah. Sarah died in 1899 and William X was listed as widowed in the 1900 cencus. By 1910 he was married to a woman named Ann ??? and it said they had been married 9 years putting their marriage date at 1901. So there was little time between Sarah's death in 1899 and marriage to Ann in 1901 to be married to Esther. Also, Elizabeth's death certificate shows that she was born in 1883 and William X was still married to Sarah in 1883. I initially thought that maybe Esther was married to David Williams, son of David X but the age difference is too great.

Elizabeth's death certificate indicates that her mother was Esther Jones (informant Paul Phillips). This may not be correct. Here's my analysis ... David X and Sarah are married about 1863 (1900 census, Clayville Borough, Jefferson County, PA)

Sarah dies in 1899 (there is specific date on F-A-G and she doesn’t show up with David in the 1900 census, Clayville again)

David marries Anna Unknown about 1901 (1910 census, Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, PA … they were married 9 yrs.; Also 1910-1911 Punxsutawney City Directory)

Therefore, if David X was married to an Esther Jones it could only have been 1900 (widowed in census) to 1901 (married Anna Unknown) or after 1910. Elizabeth W Phillips death certificate says her father was David Williams and her mother was Esther Jones.

But Elizabeth W Phillips was born in 1883 (death certificate and 1900 census, daughter) although she lived and died (1950) in Punxsutawney, the same area where David X lived.

But David X was still married to Sarah in 1883.

If Esther married David X after 1910, I suppose Esther could have had a prior marriage but then David X would not have been the father as listed on Elizabeth’s death certificate.

Also possible there was another David Williams in Punxsutawney at this time. David X had a son named David but the dates don’t work for him either. Therefore I conclude that the mother given by Paul Phillips on her death certificate is incorrect and Exlizather is the daughter of David X and Sarah Williams.
