Elizabeth (Morgans) Evans was born in Llangendeirne, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Biography

Elizabeth was born on the 20th November 1881. She is the daughter of John Morgans and Rachel Jones. Elizabeth's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1881 in the Carmarthen district. Her mother's maiden name was recorded as Jones.[1]

On the 28th July 1908 Elizabeth married Reverend John Dyer Richards, Baptist Minister at Trawsfynydd, at Tabernacl Chapel in Llanelly. The misses Ada Richards & E Richards, sisters of the groom, were bridesmaids and the best man was the Rev. W Aerwyn Jones of New Quay Cardiganshire. The couple honeymooned in Aberystwyth. [1]

The census of 1911 shows the couple living in Trawsfynydd:-

2 Apr 1911: Bron Wnion, Trawsfynydd Merionethshire, Trawsfynydd, Merionethshire, Wales
Name Relation Status Sex Age Occupation Birth Place
John Dyer Richards Head Married M 35 Independent Minister Llandebie, Carmarthenshire, Wales
Bessie Richards Wife Married F 29 Llangendeirne, Carmarthenshire, Wales

Elizabeth and John had a son in 1914 John Morgan Dyer Richards their only child. They continued to live in Trawsfynydd until 1917 when they moved to Bedlinog . They moved again in 1922 when John became the minister at Nanternis near New Quay Cardiganshire. Elizabeth became a widow in 1927 .

In the 4th quarter of 1934 in Cardiff, Elizabeth married for the second time to The Rev. Griffith John Evans a widower.

The National Library of Wales has a record from 1935 of Elizabeth depositing the manuscripts belonging to her late husband John Dyer Richards. Many of the documents that were deposited relate to entries made by her late husband for local Chair Eisteddfods where he won a number of Chairs.

For a number of years, Griffith and Elizabeth lived at 19 Crystal Avenue in the Heath area of Cardiff. This has been identified from their entries in the register of electors for 1937,38 and 39. Elizabeth's son John Morgan Dyer Richards was also registered to vote at this address.

The 1939 register has this information on the household.

1939: 19 Crystal Avenue, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales
Name Status Sex Birth Date Occupation
John G Evans Married M 23 Feb 1870 Minister of Religion (Congle) Retired
Elizabeth Evans Married F 20 Nov 1881 Unpaid Domestic Duties

Note that Elizabeth's son is missing from the record indicting he did not reside there at the time of the register's creation.

Some time after the 1939 register was created, Griffith and Elizabeth moved from Cardiff to Aberarad on the outskirts of Newcastle Emlyn in Carmarthenshire.

Elizabeth became a widow for the second time when Griffith died on the 25th June 1947 at Aberarad. She continued to live in the Newcastle Emlyn/New Quay area for some years at least until the late 1950's. She then moved again to Penryn near Falmouth in Cornwall to live close to her son.

Elizabeth died on 13 April 1962 in Cornwall, England and her estate passed probate on 11 January 1963 in Bodmin. Her son John Morgan Dyer Richards was granted probate. The probate record shows that at the time of her death, Elizabeth was at the Pennance Nursing Home, Pennance Road , Falmouth, Cornwall. Her residential address was recorded as 16 Polwithan Road, Penryn, Cornwall.[2]

Elizabeth's death (age 78) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1961 in the Redruth district.[3]

Research Notes

The Welsh Gazette for the 3rd July 1947 (page5) carries an obituary for Elizabeth's second husband Griffith Evans. It notes that the funeral took place in Cardiff Cemetery. This may be Cathays Cemetery where his first wife was buried or another cemetery in Cardiff. It is likely that following her death Elizabeth would be buried with him. It is not currently known where Elizabeth's remains are located.
