Henry Bradshaw Morgan was born on October 14, 1843 in Charity, Moore County, Tennessee, to William Alexander Morgan and Mary Davidson Morgan. He had six siblings; Benjamin, Jacob, Saphrona, William, Georgia, and Nancy. Henry enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 at age 18 and reached the rank of Major in the 41st Tennessee Infantry. He fought in the following battles: Perryville, Vicksburg, the siege of Jackson and Franklin. He lost an arm in the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. A good friend, John Rees, was killed during the battle. Henry was exchanged at City Point, Virginia on March 5, 1865. Henry married John Rees’ widow, Mary Jane Bryant Rees, on December 30, 1868. Mary Jane had a daughter, Johnnie Edna, from her marriage to John Rees. It was said that Henry raised Johnnie as if she were his own child. An indication of that is the fact that Johnnie named her first child Clara Morgan Norton. Henry and Mary Jane also had two children of their own; Jessie Boone (1871-1951) and Henry Bryant (1892-1978).
Henry and Mary Jane lived at 54 Poplar Street in Lynchburg until their death. Henry was a partner with in Mary Jane’s father’s dry goods business, J. L. Bryant & Company in Lynchburg. The building that housed the business was destroyed in the fire of 1913. He also served as Postmaster from 1893 to 1897 and as Register of Deeds from 1908 to 1923. He was also named a director of the Farmers Bank in 1889. Henry passed away on June 24, 1923 and was buried at the Lynchburg City Cemetery in his confederate uniform with his infantry flag draping the casket.
