Biography

George Morgan is a part of US Black heritage.

George was born in 1810 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was married on 6 June 1836 in Robeson County, North Carolina, to Delilah Bass.[1]

In 1840, George W Morgan was head of a family of five free colored persons in Robeson County, North Carolina. In addition to the adult couple (ages 24-35) there were two males under age 10 and one female age 10 to 14.[2]

In 1861, George (50) and Delilah (40), identifed as a colored family, were living in Kent County, Canada West. There were eight children between the ages of 2 and 21 living in the home with them.[3]

In 1868, George and Delilah arrived in Boston from St Marc, Haiti. Accompanying them were Geo (18), Wm (15), Caleb (10), Joshua (10), Jesse (8) and Queenie (13).[4]

In 1870, George and Delilah were living in Suffolk County, Massachusetts with their three youngest children, Joshua, Caleb and Jesse, who were all born in Canada.[5]

He appears in the 1880 Census in Wilson Township, Charlevoix, Michigan at age 70, as a chair maker. With him in the household are his wife Delila(h) and sons Josaway and Caleb, both age 23, laborers, born in Canada. In the next house is his son Nicholas (head), 41, farmer, born in North Carolina, and his son Cerley, 4, born in Michigan, all described as Mulatto, all parents born in North Carolina.[6]

George died on 9 August 1886 in Charlevoix County, Michigan and is buried in Wilson Cemetery, Boyne City, Charlevoix, Michigan.[7]
