James was born in 1891. He was commonly known as "Fess" among his peers. (short for Professor). He was married to Beatrice Moore in 1920 in Georgia and they had two sons and a daughter. She died at one year of age.
James commonly went by J. Stanley, or J.S. Morgan. He was educated to be a teacher, and in 1925, he was chosen to be principal of the Summer Hill School which had been formed as a school for African American Students. His wife, Beatrice, was also a teacher, and together they worked to introduce a range of extracurricular activities which included band, choir, and various sports. Their intent was to develop well rounded students. [1]
In 1951, he was invited to the Lee County Veterans School of Opelika to give the commencement address to its graduating class. [2]
JS retired in 1962 at which time, his son, J.S. Morgan, Jr. assumed the role of principal. James passed away in 1974.
His son John Henry Morgan was a Tuskegee airman who lost his life in Italy.
