Biography

John D. Morgan was born about 1852/3 in Texas, the son of James W. Morgan (1818-1864) and Elisabeth R. "Emily" Locke (1818-1896 ).

John married first Mary C. Couch on 22 Feb 1866 in Lamar County, Texas.[1]

John married second Martha "Mattie" Measles (1863- ) on 23 Dec 1880 in Lamar County, Texas.[2][3]

Their children were:

  1. Trannie Louise (Morgan) Whitley (born 1881 in High, Lamar County, Texas-1955)[4]

From The Paris News we find a letter written by Trannie (Morgan) Whitley, the daughter of John and Martha "Mattie" Morgan, that she was orphaned at age 3 when both parents died about 1884.

Notes

Backward Glances, from the Scrapbook of the late A. W. Neville, Editor of the Paris News, 1936-1956, published in The Paris News 27 Oct 1965: "Married. December 23, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. J. D. Morgan to Miss Mattie Measles, both of Lamar County. Dr. B. J. Baldwin officiating."[5]

"Backward Glances" from A. W. Neville, editor of The Paris News, 11 Dec 1939, The Paris News: "Mrs. Ed Whitley writes me from Honey Grove, expressing pleasure in reading this story. She says her father, John Morgan, first married Miss McCuin, who lived only a short time, and he then married Mattie Measles, who was Mrs. Whitley's mother. Her father worked for John Gose when Gose was sheriff and he named his daughter Trannie which was Mrs. Gose's name. As an orphan, her parents having died when she was three years old [1884], Mrs. Whitley lived with her grandfather Measles, east of Paris. The grandmother was an Allen, whose sister married John Broad."[6]
