James Morgan was born on 19 February 1850 in Tennessee.^[1] He was the son of Thomas Morgan and Rachel Presley.^[1][2]

He married Sarah Katherine Shipley on 15 March 1874 at Greene, Tennessee, United States.^[3] They had 9 children:
