Biography

Morgan Morgan was born on 19 July 1760, probably in Pennsylvania, Delaware, or Maryland. He or his father probably appeared in the 1790 Census for Allegany County, Maryland, but unfortunately the census schedules for that county were destroyed. He does appear in the 1800 Census for Georges Creek Township, Allegany County (page 33) with two young sons and two young daughters, so he was apparently married about 1790 to his wife Amanda Cailer (b. ca. 1768-69), whose parents are not yet known. She was perhaps an aunt of Margaret Cailer (who married 1810, Washington Co., Maryland, to Daniel Moyer) or aunt of John Kaylor (b. 1789; married Catherine Zimmerla; had son Jacob Kaylor b. 1818, Allegany Co., Maryland; died in Decatur, Illinois!!!). A Catherine Morgan (married 21 May 1792, Allegany Co., Maryland, to Elias Stillwell) was probably sister or cousin to Morgan Morgan.

Morgan Morgan was a weaver and presumably a farmer as well. Entries in the Deed Books of Allegany County, Maryland, tell us more about him. Book C (page 398) shows that on 22 August 1801, John Williams sold "Lyons Prospect" (130.5 acres) to Morgan Morgan and William Bell for 260 pounds. Book D (page 265) shows that William Bell sold his share of this land to Morgan on 29 November 1804, for 50 pounds. Finally, Book E (page 415) records a deed dated 17 April 1809, which states that Morgan Morgan of Muskingum County, Ohio, sold "Lyons Prospect" on 27 January 1809 to Thomas Thompson for 145 pounds and 5 shillings.

Therefore, we know that the Morgans moved to Ohio by 1809. The Deed Books of Muskingum County, Ohio, show that the County Commissioners granted two quarter sections to Morgan Morgan (Section 24SE, Range 8, Twp. 3, on 15 May 1817; and Section 24SW on 06 April 1820). He apparently appears in the Tax List of April 1812.

He lived during the time (1816) of the "year without a summer" due to the cold summer weather caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora volcano the previous year. "On June 25, 1816, The Franklin Repository in Pennsylvania reported that snow blanketed the area. Around the same time, The Evening Post in New York described freezing temperatures and nearly a foot of snow. Farm animals in Vermont succumbed to the freezing temperatures as long-time residents said they’d never seen anything like it!" "As fall approached, the Hartford Courant noted that 1816 would go down in history because there had been frost every month of the year. European papers complained that constant rains had ruined crops and created a famine."

He appears in Jefferson Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, in the 1820 Census (page 138) and 1830 Census (page 230). It is not known when Amanda died, but Morgan apparently married 2nd to Rachel. He died on 19 April 1835, near Shannon (Cass or Muskingum Township), Muskingum County, Ohio, and he was buried in Shannon Cemetery (Baptist).

Research Note: He is possibly an uncle of George Morgan (b. ca. 1780?, Delaware; d, 11 May 1852, Muskingum Co., Ohio); married 08 November 1821, to Ruth Nuckle; married (2nd) 13 April 1828, to Phoebe Wood. Or is it possible that George was his son by an unknown first wife. This is possible evidence that Morgan Morgan was perhaps also born in Delaware. Of course, it is also possible that George Morgan is not related at all ( https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/3966417/person/-1666001160/facts ).
