John was born in Ireland around 1813 to parents John Moore and Hannah McGrath. At the age of 20 he was transported to Australia as a convict arriving in 1833 on the Royal Admiral for stealing an umbrella. His convict number was 33-2472, he was Catholic and had been a painter for 4 1/2 years. He was listed as a native of Dublin City. He was sentenced to 7 years on the 3rd of October 1832. He was described as having a ruddy complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. His teeth were very irregular, and his right nostril was disfigured. He had a tattoo of a fish on the inside right lower arm and a J on the inside left arm. He also had 4 blue dots on the back of the ball of the left thumb. Height 5 feet 4 1/2. Year of Birth listed as 1813.
The Royal Admiral departed Dublin on the 5th of June 1833 and arrived in Sydney on the 26th, October 1833. There were 220 convicts on board 5 whom died on the voyage. It was commanded by David Fotheringham and ships surgeon was Andrew Henderson.
The ship was 113ft and 4 in (34.5m) and 28ft 7 inches (8.7m) wide. It was launched in May 1828.
John was granted his ticket of freedom on 10th Feb 1840.
In 1840 he married Ellen Tiernan at Camden Oaks, Picton, New South Wales.
He died in 1862 at Forbes New South Wales.
