Biography

Lucia Mondello is known from the trial in Bari, in which her husband and two of her sons are defendants.

Lucia is married to Salvatore Bagarella on 23 September 1928.^[1] This index does not give her parents' names. Salvatore, her husband, is born in 1906. In the baptismal index from 1905-14, there are two girls by this name.^[2][3] One of the girls dies in infancy.^[4] The other, by process of elimination, is very likely to be Salvatore's wife.

Lucia is born 8 March 1907 and baptized eight days later. She is the daughter of Calogero Mondello and Maria di Frisco. Lucia's godfather is Teodoro Mannina.^[2] She is named after her paternal grandmother.

Salvatore and Lucia have six children: Giuseppe, Calogero (1935), Leoluca (1942), Maria Giovanna, one more who is not known, and the youngest, Antonietta.

The children grow up in one of the tufa houses built around the square of the hospital. Nearby is the ivy covered church of Santa Rosalia. Above them is a path leading to the ice factory.^[5]

Salvatore works in a mill with his childhood friend, Bernardo Provenzano.

Salvatore is sent to confinement in Northern Italy from 1963 to 1968 for Mafia-related crimes.

Salvatore and two of his sons, Calogero and Leoluca, are defendants at the 1969 trial in Bari.^[6]
