Biography

Elizabeth J. Mollohan was born about 1828, in Virginia, USA. She is believed to have been born in the area that would later become Braxton County, Virginia in 1836 (later to become Braxton County, West Virginia, in 1863). She was the daughter of James F. Mollohan and Nancy [Robertson] Mollohan.

• Braxton County, Virginia was formed in 1836. It became Braxton County, West Virginia, in 1863, during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Elizabeth is known to have had a daughter named Mariah Margaret Crowley. Mariah is recorded on her death record as having been born on May 10, 1853, in West Virginia. Her father is recorded as being Jim Crowley. It is believed that Elizabeth and Jim Crowley were never married. No records for their marriage have as yet been found. No birth records for Mariah, under the surname of Crowley or Mollohan have as yet been found. It is believed that Mariah was illegitimate.

• Mariah Margaret Crowley was actually born in 1850, presumably in Braxton County, Virginia. She is listed as living in her grandparents' household in Braxton County, along with her mother, Elizabeth. Mariah is listed under the surname of Mollohan.

Elizabeth's father, James F. Mollohan, died of Consumption (Tuberculosis), on August 29, 1854, in Braxton County, VA. The whereabouts of his burial are as yet unknown.

Elizabeth married Charles Caleb Riffle on July 26, 1855, in Braxton County, Virginia (WV).

Charles and Elizabeth had an unknown daughter, on May 30, 1856, in Braxton County, Virginia (WV). She is recorded on the record as Female Riffle. It is believed that this child died before 1860. No other records for her have as yet been found.

Charles and Elizabeth had a second child, James F. Riffle. He was born on January 10, 1858, in Braxton County, Virginia (WV).

Charles and Elizabeth are believed to have divorced by July of 1865, when Charles is known to have remarried.

Charles married his second wife, Sarah Elizabeth Wine, on July 6, 1865, in Lewis County, West Virginia. The couple had had a child out of wedlock six months prior to the marriage. Emma Jane "Emzie" Riffle was born on January 15, 1865, in Braxton County, West Virginia. This would mean she had been conceived about April of 1864.

Elizabeth [Mollohan] Riffle married her second known husband, Richard Marks, on March 22, 1867, in Vinton County, Ohio, USA.

Elizabeth's mother, Nancy [Robertson] Mollohan, died on August 2, 1892, in Vinton Township, Vinton County, Ohio, USA. She was buried in the Arbaugh Cemetery, in Vinton Township, Vinton County, Ohio, USA.

Elizabeth J. [Mollohan] Marks died on March 21, 1915, in Wilkesville Township, Vinton County, Ohio, USA. The cause of death on her death certificate was listed as Accute Bronchitus complicated with old age. She was listed as being buried in the Curry Cemetery in Wilkesville, Vinton County, Ohio.
