Biography

Bernhard was the 1st child of the 7 children of Peter Adam Mohr and Magdalena Fischer. He was born 13 September, 1863 in Hambach, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

Bernhard began working as a grape picker and vine cultivator. Some time later he bought some land and grew grapes. When he was not working in the vineyard, he worked as a day laborer and later even an organ grinder, a "Dreihorgelspieler", to make ends meet.

Bernhard married Christina Berger 14 June 1889 in Hambach. She was born 15 October 1865 in Hardenburg, Bad Dürkheim, the daughter of the stonemason Anton Ferdinand Berger and Katharina Berger in Hardenburg. Bernhard and Christina had 8 children. Five of their children were stillborn, one died at 1 day old, and the 2 survivors, Anton and Victor, were both killed in France in 1916-17 during the 1st World War.

In a letter dated 12 February 1900 to his sister, Anna, his father wrote about Bernhard: "You asked in your last letter about many things which I will try to tell you about. 1st, I am with Bernhard, that you know. Bernhard in the last 2 years went into debt for 710 marks for one acre on which he leveled the land for a vineyard that he also paid 490 marks for. The grape harvest was bad that fall, so he really didn’t earn back enough money to pay back on his loan capital. He is having a rough time, is going around with an organ and also works in the fields, nothing is too much for him, but he can’t make ends meet and therefore I have to suffer too, because I can’t do much anymore. I am often in bed sick, I have stomach problems and dizzy spells in my head and after all that Bernhard is mean to me. Do not write about this in your letters."
