The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook page:

SERVED HIS THREE YEARS - Joseph Mayville was born in Rawdon, PQ, about 50 miles north of Montreal. He was the son of Pierre Mayville and Adelaide Eroux who brought their family to the Chateaugay, NY, area to work in 1857. Joseph was working in Ellenburg as a farm laborer when he enlisted in the 98th Infantry in Fort Covington on December 2, 1861. He and his cousin, Toussaint, enlisted on the same day to serve for three years and both were recorded as Movilles

They were mustered into the U. S. service at Malone in February 1862, for a three years' term and left for Washington on March 8th. The regiment embarked for the Peninsula almost immediately and was present at the Siege of Yorktown on April 16th. They fought at Williamsburg and Savage Station but were not closely engaged until the Battle of Fair Oaks, where the total loss of the regiment was 71 killed, wounded or missing. It was held in reserve during the Seven Days' Battles and stationed at Yorktown at the time of the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Assigned to the Department of North Carolina in December 1862, they became a part of the 1st brigade, 2nd division, 18th corps in January 1863, and served until the following October at various posts held by that corps. They returned to Virginia, and served until April 1864, at Newport News, Portsmouth and in the Currituck District in Virginia.

They were engaged at Swift Creek and Proctor's Creek, Drewry's Bluff and Bermuda Hundred, in May 1864 and joined the Army of the Potomac before Cold Harbor and there lost 114 in killed, wounded and missing. After a summer of fighting in the Petersburg area, Joseph was discharged on December 1864 at Chaffin’s Farm when his 3-year commitment was up. His cousin, Toussaint, had deserted in Malone in April 1864 during a furlough.

Joseph returned to Ellenburg and his wife, Emeline Guerin, and his 3-year-old son. He supported his family by working in a local tannery. After his wife died in 1899, he moved to Barre, VT, to live with family and died there in 1924. His cousin, Toussaint, died in 1911, in Michigan.
