Rex was recorded as 17 years old on the 1940 United States Census. He, his parents and his siblings were living in Anderson County, Texas. Rex had completed 4 years of high school.[6]
He was married and was the father of at least two children. These close family members are presumed to still be living.[3]
James R. Mitchell was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II.[7][8][3]
From his obituary: "He was a field superintendent for the Exxon Corporation for 40 years, and he was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church and the VFW Kilgore Post."[3]
James Rex Mitchell died on 28 August 2001 in Longview, Harrison County, Texas at the age of 78.[9] He was buried in Rosewood Park Cemetery, Longview, Gregg County, Texas,.[3][10]
