Biography

Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton was born on 19 June 1809. He was the son of Robert Pemberton Milnes and Hon. Henrietta Maria Monckton-Arundell. Milnes was a persistent suitor of Florence Nightingale (who finally refused to marry him), and one of her staunchest supporters along with the statesman Sidney Herbert. He married Hon. Annabella Hungerford Crewe, daughter of John Crewe, 2nd Baron Crewe and Henrietta Maria Anne Walker-Hungerford, on 31 July 1851. He died on 11 August 1885 at age 76. Then, he was buried at Fryston.

He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.) There he was drawn into a literary set, and became a member of the famous Apostles Club, which then included Alfred Lord Tennyson, Arthur Hallam, Richard Chenevix Trench, Joseph Williams Blakesley, and others. After taking his degree, Milnes travelled abroad, spending some time at the University of Bonn. From there he went to Italy and Greece, and published in 1834 a volume of Memorials of a Tour in some Parts of Greece, describing his experiences.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Pontefract between 1837 and 1863. He was created 1st Lord Houghton, of Great Houghton, West Riding Yorkshire [U.K.] on 20 August 1863.

He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) . He held the office of Trustee of the British Museum. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.

He wrote the book Life and Letters of John Keats; Memorials of a Tour in Greece; Memorials of Many Scenes; Palm Leaves; Monographs, personal and social; and others along with many Poems.
