The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Records 1861-1865 Facebook Page:
John William Millington originally enlisted in the 93rd Infantry when he was 18 years old in Albany. He mustered in as a private on October 10, 1861 and after drilling in Albany left for Washington with a regiment of 998 men on February 14, 1862. They first camped at Riker’s Island in New York City and then traveled to the capital about three weeks later. In 1862, the regiment had no casualties despite having been at the Siege of Yorktown, the Seven Days’ Battle, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. At the latter two cities, they were detailed to provost guard duties around the battlefield headquarters.
It wasn’t until John was in winter quarters that he became ill with typhoid fever. He was sent to hospital and was discharged for disability from a Convalescent Camp in Virginia on February 22, 1863, a little over a year since he left Albany.
He made a quick recovery and on July 21, 1863, enlisted in the newly-formed 16th Cavalry in Plattsburgh and was mustered into Company H. For the rest of 1863, all of 1864, and in March and April 1865, the regiment spent its time in Northern Virginia; finally at the surrender of General Lee. If he had stayed with the 93rd, he wouldn’t have had the adventure that came a few days after the war had ended; the ride through Virginia to capture John Wilkes Booth. His job when they captured the assassin, was to guard him. Years later John wrote an account of that night. [1][2]
John returned to farming, married and, like many Civil War Soldiers, decided to move west. He first tried Minnesota, then moved to Iowa where he worked as a carpenter. His first wife, Phebe St. Dennis, died in 1888 after 20 plus years of marriage and several children. In Woodbury, Iowa he married Mary Louise Vermillion on October 6, 1904. Later, they moved to Portland, OR, where he died on November 11, 1914, and was buried in the historic Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery.
