Tanner's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1886 in the Morpeth district.[1]
He got the nickname "Tanner" because he was "half the size" of his brother Bob (a tanner was half a bob, or sixpence).
While professionally Tanner was a coal miner, he was also a non-professional footballer with his local non-league club Ashington, where he played as goalkeeper. All four of his sons became professional footballers (as did nephew Jackie Milburn) and two of his grandsons won the World Cup with England.
He served as a private with the 22nd Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers in the First World War, where he was captured by the Germans (press Edit for full story).
