Change of Name from Milbanke to Noel
In 1815, Ralph's brother-in-law Thomas Noel, Viscount Wentworth died. Thomas had no children. The condition of Thomas Noel's will was that his sister Judith would inherit all his property, but Judith and her husband, and their heirs had to adopt the surname Noel and the arms of Noel. This was done by Royal Licence and published in the Gazette on 29 May 1815. [1] The condition of this will subsequently affected Ralph and Judith's only daughter Anne Isabella and her husband Lord George Byron, who similarly had to change their surnames to Noel to inherit Ralph's property.
