Biography

William James Midwinter was born before 17 April 1831, in Chancingleah, Gloucestershire, England and was baptized on 17 April 1831 in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England, the son of Joseph Midwinter and Sarah King. He had five sisters, Jane Midwinter, Maria (Midwinter) Bartlett, Ann Midwinter, Harriet (Midwinter) Brown and Catherine (Midwinter) Wilding,

His father Joseph was born in about 1796 in Winson, Gloucestershire, England and his mother Sarah King was born n about 1793, in Winson, Gloucestershire, England.

In the Census of 1851, on 30 March 1851, 20 year old William was living with his parents Joseph and Sarah and his three yoinger sisters, Ann, Harriet and Catherine. at Winson, Gloucestershire, England, with his parents [1].

He was 25 years old when he married Mary Ann Fox on 29 September 1857 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England and Mary was aged 21 years.
There are two separate sources for the marriage of William and Mary Ann being for both 29 September 1856 and 29 September 1857 which appear to be for the same couple. A view of the original document would confirm the correct year as one must be an incorrect transcription. This is possibly to do with the changes in the calender [2][3].

Mary Ann Fox was born on about 28 August 1836, in Gnosall, Staffordshire, England and died on 26 January 1883 at Burra, South Australia, Australia.

In 1861, William and Mary were living at Great Rissington, Gloucestershire, England, on April 7 1861, as the Head of the household and his occupation was recorded as being a Railway policeman.

William and Mary Ann and their three children, Mary Ann, Eliza and John George, migrated to South Australia, Australia, leaving Plymouth on 10 April 1866 and arriving at Port Adelaide, South Australia on 14 July 1866 aboard the "British Lion". Their oldest son William had obviously died prior to the journey [4]. The family lived at the Baldina Iron Mine, Burra, South Australia, Australia.

William and Mary had eight children, Mary Ann (Midwinter) Morrison (1859 - 1927), William Midwinter [elder] (1860 - bef. 1866), Eliza (Midwinter) Jones (1863 - 1932), John George Midwinter (1865 - 1942) all born in Gloucestershire, England, and William Midwinter [younger] (1870 - 1912?), Amelia (Midwinter) Trevilyan (1873 - 1971), Lucy Jane Midwinter (1875 - 1904) and Alice (Midwinter) Phillips (1877 - 1967) born at or near Burra, South Australia, Australia.

His wife Mary died on 26 January 1883 at Burra, South Australia, Australia.

William then married Emma Elizabeth Barltrop on 3 December 1883, when aged 52, in Burra, South Australia, Australia [5].

Emma Elizabeth Barltrop was born on 10 March 1840, in Kent, England.

William and Emma had 4 children, Janet (Midwinter) Nelson, C. James Midwinter, Lucy Midwinter and Mary (Midwinter) Taeuber.

His occupations were Labourer, publican, farmer, Agricultural labourer and Railway policeman.

He moved to Edgeware Road, Hyde Park, South Australia, Australia where he was living at the time of his son William's death in 1912 then to 53, Opey-avenue, Unley, South Australia, Australia where he died.

William passed away on 19 July 1916, at age 85 in Unley, South Australia, Australia [6][7] and he was buried on 20 July 1916, in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia [8].
