Hugh Teare Middleton was born before 1740 son of William Middleton and Elizabeth (Teare) Middleton. Hugh served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Before attaining that rank, Hugh was a Lieutenant, Captain and then Major, under the command of Colonel Leroy Hammond. [1] Hugh is also honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his patriotic service as a Member of the General Assembly and Road Commissioner of the Ninety-Six District of the state of South Carolina. [2]
The first of the Middleton family to settle around the present Meriwether and Clark's Hill area in South Carolina, was Hugh Teare Middleton. Hugh's father was born in Charles County, Maryland, the son of William Middleton, who was born 1685-1686, the son of Robert Middleton and his wife, Mary Wheeler, born March 1658, the daughter of Major John Wheeler and his wife, Mary, of Charles County, Maryland.
It is not known where the original Robert Middleton was from directly; whether from Va. or from England, but he appears to have gone to Maryland prior to 1671. His son, William (the father of Major Hugh of SC) married ca. 1712 to Elizabeth Tear, the daughter of Rev. Hugh Tear, probably a Presbyterian minister, judging from the fact that he was closely associated in a community of Presbyterians. Her father and mother, Hugh Tear and Ruth Nine, were married in 1681.
Hugh Teare Middleton evidently went to Virginia for a few years before coming to South Carolina. He was followed by his brothers, Robert and Holland, who both soon removed to Columbia County, Ga. Robert Middleton, or his son, Robert, was a Colonel in the Revolution as a Captain. Holland died in Hancock County, Ga. ca. 1796, leaving a large family, which about 1818, removed to Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas and as far as California. It is not known what children Hugh's brother, Robert, left, except probably Robert, Jr. who removed to Kentucky ca. 1797-98, with his wife, Elizabeth Haynie, and later moved to Miss., where his daughter, Elizabeth, married David Morgan.
Hugh Teare Middleton is known to have owned land in SC In the Long Cane Section of present Abbeville District (now McCormick County), in 1762, and where later he appears on the old account books of William Calhoun. In Dec. 1768, he appears on the Georgia books of Columbia County, or presumably he, applying for a grant of land, which was given to all settlers saying on his application, that he was sometimes in the province of Ga. with a wife and 6 children, the eldest 11 years old and youngest 9 mo. old. His land was on Little River, about 10 miles above its mouth. Sometimes later, he was living on the SC side, at or near the Middleton's Ferry, near which he is buried, in a clump of trees about 300 yards from the public road. He died Nov. 30, 1803. His home fell of old age, being used for a barn in 1820.
Hugh married 4 times. The names of two of his wives are mentioned in the administration of his estate, Lucy Williams (3rd wife); and Agatha Garrett (4th wife). Hugh married Mary Coghill and had 6 children. Hugh secondly married Martha Haynie and had 5 children. Hugh's third wife was Lucy Williams, and they were the parents of three children. Hugh Teare Middleton died November 30, 1803 at his home, "Locust Dale," in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
Researching the extensive Middleton and Coghill families I cannot find a Mary Coghill who married Hugh Tear Middleton, but rather Mary Coghill, b. 1719 d. ca 1749, Charles, Maryland, married William Middleton b. ca 1718 in Charles County, Maryland d. ca 1755. They had 2 sons: Isaac Smallwood b. 1741 and Hugh b. ca 1740.
Records from Herndon and other sources state that he had four wives but the names of only three are verified: Martha Haynie, Sarah, Lucy Williams. [3] Other sources examined state that his first wife was Martha Haynie, second Sarah (Powell), third Lucy Williams, fourth Agatha Garrett (no children).[4]
Records of the Daughters of American Revolution recognize three wives: Martha Heynie, Lucy Williams and Agatha Garrett.
A son William H. Middleton. Mildred Middleton, his widow, married in 1804, Captain Samuel Savage, Jr. They moved to Alabama near Florence. In the county court records of Florence, there have been the names, Samuel Savage and William H. Middleton (1820s) on the same papers. One of them mentions John Middleton in Edgefield County, South Carolina and Hugh Middleton Jr., father of William H. Middleton.

For the descendants of Maj. Hugh Middleton, son of Wm Middleton Sr and Elizabeth Tears.
It has been accepted by descendants of Maj. Hugh Middleton that he was to have married as his 2nd wife Lidia Coghill, dau. of Wm Coghill and Ann Middleton. They were never married. Lidia Coghill married as his 1st wife John Marlow, son of Ralph Marlow and Ann Middleton. John and Lidia married bef. 21 Sep 1746 when their first son Middleton Marlow was born. John and Lidia also had a son Smallwood Coghill Marlow and a dau. Ann Marlow. Lidia died sometime after Jul 1752 and John remarried bef. Jun 1755.
Semmes, states in his book Semmes and Kindred Families; 1956; that a grandson of Hugh Middleton, says that Hugh had 4 wives and but that the names of the first two wives are not known....so Semmes doesn't agree that Hugh married Lidia Coghill, as he didn't even mention her.
The original pairing of Hugh Middleton and Lidia Coghill is found in the research of Hugh Calhoun Middleton in his work titled The Middleton Papers which was done in 1924. And Hugh C. Middleton's findings are unsourced and he gives no proof of the marriage,at best it was JUST a guess on his part. But regardless of that missing proof/source, this pairing was accepted as truth by Daniel B. Lloyd, who then passed it on in his book called MIDDLETONS and KINDRED FAMILIES OF SOUTHERN MD, 1975. So until till this time it has been widely accepted and not researched. And research shows that Lidia Coghill did not marry Hugh Tears Middleton.
From my reading of Lloyds book, it looks like Hugh C. Middleton felt that since Mary Coghill had married Wm Middleton bro of Hugh Tears Middleton, and we can't find a wife for Hugh, then it only figures that her Mary's sister Lidia was the right candidate to be the 1st wife for Hugh Tears Middleton. As we know that is how many marriages took place. But that is not the case for these sisters.
But we now know that Lidia Coghill married John Marlow of Prince George's Co., MD. I encourage all of you descendants of Hugh to do the research and make the finding for yourselves.
