Summary: Captain António de Meza of Madeira was a Maritime Captain and an educated man.

Captain António de Meza was born before 1593 in Portugal. He was the legitimate son of António de Meza and Luzia Guesso.

António's father was deceased when he married but his mother was still living.[3] António's children were all baptized in the church Our Lady of the Assumption in the parish of Sé.

Before António and Sancha had children he had gotten an education and achieved the rank of Captain. This earned him a higher level of stature and respect. Madeira still relied heavily on it's sugar cane trade during this time.[9] It would be another century before it would shift from sugar cane to wine. Imported slaves made up 10% of Madeira's population.[9] As a military captain he most likely spent time in a leadership role in town as opposed to sailing the ships that carried the sugarcane to the continent.[10]

Research Notes

  • There are most likely more children. I stopped looking for the night after finding and adding Alonso.(Silva-1055 01:39, 23 October 2019 (UTC)) Started looking again today stopping here.(Silva-1055 23:19, 24 October 2019 (UTC))
  • To-do: Find the rest of his children and look for his death. Also, add his parents per his marriage record.(01:39, 23 October 2019 (UTC))
